Communion Review

Top 10 things we learnt about Communion Bar:

1) The best way to obtain a confession isn't by dragging someone to church, but by kindly inviting them down to Communion Bar in Camberwell and generously plying them with exotic cocktails.

2) Where else would you expect to find Communion but on Church Street? The street that is single-handedly turning Camberwell into hipster’s paradise.

3) The first thing you’ll notice is the décor with magnificent, illuminated, stained glass windows depicting famous biblical scenes adorning the walls.

4) The church-going experience continues as you are seated. At each table you will find complimentary communion wafers and a mini chalice of red wine.

5) ‘Artisanal’ is rapidly becoming an overused word, but here it’s OK to preach about it when they have ingredients like calamansi juice and Nigerian Guinness foam. Every week they source ingredients from Brixton Market and other local stores.

6) In fact, there’s a whole section of the cocktail menu dedicated to South London. The Nurse Pinoy is in honour of the dedicated and devout Christian Filipino nurses at King's College Hospital nearby.

7) Their cocktails are so special, you could probably write a religious booklet about them for imbibers to worship. The Crioleo Cacao Elements Eight Rum offers an aromatic chocolate/coffee hit on the nose but a surprisingly balanced experience on the palate. Another cocktail I recommend is Uncle Mauby made using homemade pineapple wine, fresh Granadilla, white rum, dark rum and Mauby bark syrup. This holy elixir is refreshing, unusual and, most importantly, ever so drinkable. Round your holy experience off by trying their irresistible homemade Amaretto.

8)  Sanctify your evening with tapas brought down from their sister restaurant, Angels & Gypsies. Whether its gambas or tortilla, they aim to buy all ingredients from local markets and have their food freshly made.

9) They have acoustic live music sessions as well as rolling exhibitions to keep the faithful enthused. Currently there is a photographic exhibition of Rolling Stones’ famous 1973, Starfucker tour.

10) The only problem is that Camberwell is extremely tube-unfriendly. North Londoners have to endure multiple crowded bus journeys to reach the area. The manager explained that there are another six work-in-progress cocktails due on the menu soon so if they keep up this great work, people might be trekking to this Mecca from not just North London but all over the world.
