Massis Lebanese Grill & Bar Review

Snuggled on a corner in the business district of Paddington Central is the Lebanese grill and bar, Massis. An intimate eatery that, after walking past the usual Zizzi and Starbucks-type chains, looked like it offered a more welcome respite on the Thursday evening we visited. It did, and more. The feast my friend and I slowly made our way through over the course of the subsequent two and a half hours was fantastic and highly recommended.

After being greeted by a smile at the door and taken to a generously sized round table, our friendly waiter for the evening, Ovi, introduced himself and offered to talk us through the menu; he was cheerful and very attentive all evening, without being intrusive. The low lit lanterns and candles, spread a romantic hue over the room, highlighting nice little touches such as the wall of miss-matched Moroccan mirrors, a cosy bench seated corner, and a spiral staircase leading to toilets downstairs. The glass front of the building folded out to blend the inside with the tree-lined terrace – perfect for the warm summer eve.

We delved straight into the impressive list of Massis’ signature cocktails. My friend selected a Don Carlino – an exciting mix of crushed red chillies, passion fruit, Don Julio blanco and Agavero blue agave liquer. I chose the Jose Coco, a crisp and exotic Best Bartender Awards nominee.

The menu is separated into cold and hot Mezze and soups – a great collection of small dishes, priced from £2 - £6, made for mixing and matching - and a main meal list of salads, meat and poultry, seafood, wraps and an assortment of Mezze platters, priced from £3.50 - £15. There’s enough choice to satisfy carnivores and vegetarians alike.

We kicked off with Hummus Shawarma, a wonderful combination of creamy hummus topped with tender slices of lamb and toasted pine nuts; Rkakat, Lebanese pastry rolls filled with halloumi, feta cheese and herbs; and Arayes, charcoal grilled Lebanese bread filled with uniquely seasoned minced lamb, delicious, beautifully presented and complemented by some freshly baked flat bread. We chose a slightly spicy, full-bodied, tasty Lebanese reserve red wine to go with it, which went down a little too easily. There’re plenty of other worldly reds, whites, roses and champagnes to choose from and a well stocked bar serving beers, spirits and soft drinks.

After devouring the first course and already feeling rather full – there was enough to happily feed four - we were left for a good amount of time before our main meals arrived. My friend chose the Massis Grill Selection, a trio of chargrilled chicken, lamb and Kafta with rice and salad. I opted for the Mixed Fish Skewers, two generously sized sticks of salmon, tuna and swordfish alternated with aubergine, courgette and cherry tomato. The fish was cooked to perfection and in the words of my guest the lamb was ‘fantastic’. We also shared a delicious crisp Mediterranean Feta Salad which was garnished with fresh, flat leaf parsley and some complementary pitta bread, freshly baked on the premises. All the food is prepared and cooked either on site or at Massis’ sister restaurant in St Christopher’s Place, and it shows.

Throughout our meal, there was a constant buzz of contented customers – a mixed bunch of families, after work groups and couples – many of which had left by the time we’d finally devoured our second course, leaving a few small tables and a lovely ambience.

The waiter insisted we end the meal in the traditional Lebanese way, with a fruit platter and Baklava. We were treated to slices of melon, nectarine, apple and grapes and the deliciously sweet pistachio nut sprinkled pastries, washed down with some fresh mint tea – made using wild mint leaves and steeped in an Aladdin style silver teapot – a perfect way to finish off.

Drunk on food and thoroughly content, we headed in to the night, already planning and looking forward to our next visit.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
