Bizzaro Review

In the tourist hostel that is the Paddington area, dominated with establishments out to gather the visitor pound, this restaurant is an unblemished gem. Located slightly to the west of Paddington Station on Craven Road, a first reaction to its cheerful green sign might be to feel that Bizzaro is, well tacky. This slight feeling of unease is heightened by an advert for dancing which sports a drawing of middle aged women in voluminous skirts, sketched in a style I haven’t seen since the Peter and Jane books I was force read in primary school.

But don’t let this dissuade you; just close down any higher aesthetic sense you may have and step inside, your taste buds will thank you. And the interior is not bad, just what you’d expect tables, chairs and candles; nothing too whimsical.

And you don’t have to dance (in fact I’ve never been there when the dancing is on).

Trust me.

On this occasion a friend and I were looking for a simple late dinner after one of those quick drink appointments that transpire to have nothing to do with speed or the singular form of the word drink. Perhaps for this reason we were ushered into one of the more secluded sections of the restaurant, which is in its self divided into four; three on the top floor and one downstairs.

Both of us were practised Bizzaro diners and could pretty much order off the cuff but the choice is so large its always worth taking time over the menu and to check out what the specials are for that day (look out for the lamb shank with mushroom risotto – if you find it don’t bother with a starter!). As well as the standard pizza and pasta selection you would expect, there is also a good selection of fish, chicken and steak dishes.

Of course a large menu requires a little wine to aid concentration and the decision making processes; we had the house white which turned out to be a tad unusual; a pleasantly fruity one tasting almost of sultanas. Dish debating over I ordered the bean and pasta soup as a starter and a pizza daviola (pepperoni) for main. My companion had sardines (despite the huge menu he always does) followed by spaghetti carbonara.

I have a real problem with most pizzerias concerning the base (just don’t mention Pizza Hut) but Bizzaro produces some of the best to be found in London; I’d wager even outside of Italy. My daviola was thin light and doughy with a strong tomato base but not so strong as to do anything but heighten the spicy tang of the pepperoni; exquisite.

Sadly it didn’t stay with me long, they never do.

To round off I had tiramisu, a portion so large the waiter had to fight to keep it on the plate when he brought it over, and coffee.

Prices are reasonable for London, the meal came to about £20 a head and felt like a bargain.

“I booked a table at the restaurant for a 21st birthday party for my boyfriend. The staff made a big fuss of him which he loved. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We had brought our own cake and they helped us decorate it and serve it to us. Staff were really friendly and even played a practical joke which got us all laughing. Everything felt really personal, which was very important on his 21st. The food was delicious and nicely presented. Overall, they made the evening a night to remember for all of us. We will definitely be attending again, and telling all our friends about it. Thank you ever so much!”

“I found this place to be absolutely awful. We were greeted by a very grumpy old man. He scowled at me and answered me curtly when i asked if there they had any herbal teas available and then when i asked for skim milk with my tea, he acted like i was some kind of fussy freak. We were sitting outside to start with but it was a bit cold so we moved inside... which was also reciprocated with a feeling like we were 'hassling' them and i felt like he just couldn't be bothered with us. my friend ordered a pizza which was nice. I ordered a salad which quite frankly was utter crap. They brought me the wrong salad to start with and then there was so much dressing on i hardly ate it. I think the waiter was even embarrassed about what he brought out to me. I felt embarrassed eating it. I was really pissed off and quite frankly I will never go there again.”

“We found this place just a short walk from our hotel, we ate in the evening and the restaurant was heaving with customers which tells you how popular it is. The atmosphere was full of energy of people who enjoyed good authentic italian food. Most of the people were having pizza and pasta dishes for the sake of time but we were not in any hurry so i had the sea bass which took abit more time but was definitely worth the wait, it was the best i've had, cooked simply with herbs and sitting on a very delicate lemon sauce absolutely scrummy! My wife and i were so impressed we went there for lunch the following day which was much quieter and had a nice chat with staff who were very friendly and on top of all that the prices were very reasonable for London, i would recommend it to anyone. I shall make a point of visitng it next time i'm in London.”

“What can I say? We first encountered this place more than 15 years ago. We were looking for some decent food at a reasonable price. A glance at the menu promised both and we weren't disappointed! From smoked salmon in a cheesy cream sauce over pasta to trota Cleopatra and heaven knows what else over three or four visits in '91, plus a repeat visit in '97, the thought of this place, even with its somewhat quirky atmosphere, still makes me salivate in anticipation!”

“What a dining treat! Wonderful food, and supurb attention from the staff. It was so enjoyable that we were drawn back there to feast three nights in a row in spite of other dining options. The meal tastes better in pleasant surroundings and Bizzaro succeeded in providing these. Hats off to Bizzaro and the wonderful Italians who greet, serve and prepare food there. I look forward to returning the next time I see London.”

“Nice decor. Quick service. Average Tourist Place. Pizza was OK. Spaghetti was less than average, but OK. The Lasagna was supposed to be better, but we were told after our meal. ”

“What can I say?!? The cuisine was DEEEElicious, the atmosphere was lively and the service was above and beyond my expectations. My friend and I had just arrived in London (mind you, after an 11 hour flight) with our hair pulled back and dressed in...well let's just say, clothes I usually would not wear in public. Anyhoo, we were famished and wandering the streets for something that would jump out at us. And so the restaurant happened to be a quaint little Italian joint. As we walked into Bizzaro, we were immediately welcomed by this adorable italian gentleman, Guiseppi (sorry if I butchured the spelling). He and Daxt, another kind cutie, treated us like queens...despite our drained personalities! I really just want to thank you both for a wonderful experience for my first visit to London : ) A smile and great humor can leave a lasting impression. Thank you Daxt and Guiseppi!! WE LOVE YOU!!”
