The Gyngleboy Review

Book a table at The Gyngleboy

It’s probably not fair to fault politeness in others, but if they’re polite to a fault, then things can get a little awkward, it’s true. Call me picky, but I prefer a friendly smile and a simple ‘hello’, rather than the cold, and somewhat stiff, ‘Good afternoon, what may one do for Sir?’ approach that I got at the Gyngleboy in Paddington the other day. I shan’t bang on about the service, but when you’re paying upwards of six quid for a glass of wine – which was served at entirely the wrong temperature, I might add – then I figure I’m paying for a warm greeting, as well as the swishy glass of New World Merlot, or whatever. Anyway, rant over.

A Gyngleboy is a type of old-fashioned beer mug, lined with black leather and decorated with jingling bells. The Gyngleboy is a wine bar situated in the affluent, and therefore pleasant, Lancaster Gate area of West London. It’s housed in a former bank building, which may sound grim, but actually gives the place a damn sight more character than, well, than a bank. Sawdust and what appeared to be carefully arranged autumn leaves adorn the floor, and there’s a dark, candlelit ambience which – even at one o’clock in the afternoon, screams ‘wine bar!’, perhaps a little too loudly.

Food comes in the form of posh sandwiches, plates of patÈ and – a little incongruously, I thought – some common or garden nachos. There is, as you may have hoped, a good wine list with many wines available by the glass. But here’s a problem. Not every wine is available by the glass, which in these days of super sophisticated wine-preserving gizmos is a little disappointing. And, to reiterate, the wine list is good, but not brilliant. New World: check. Old World: check. Some Trendy Stuff: check. Anything Really Interesting: absent. Everything vinous you need is – sort of, strictly speaking – there, but with some of it ringing in at £8.40 for a large glass, don’t expect to be propping up the bar for very long unless you’re totally minted, which some of the clientele – I admit – clearly were.

But when I left, the barman gave me a cheery ‘Goodbye!’ and a smile, which was nice if a little late. But anyway, the Gyngleboy does what it says on the wrapper, though you may not want to hang around too long to see what’s inside the tin.
