The Castle Review
As far as pubs go the Castle in Holland Park does exactly what it says on the tin. And maybe a little bit more. Dimmed lighting, candles and comfy couches make it the ideal choice for a few chilled out mid-week pints. The music is unobtrusive - in fact barely audible - so both conversation and el vino can flow. Friendly staff and friendly punters make the overall atmosphere very relaxed.
What differentiates the Castle from the average pub is the menu. You can order anything from mussels served with ciabatta bread (£6.50- well worth it, the bread is to die for) or calamari strips (£7.95), to a grilled steak sambo (£5.50) or a hearty beef casserole (£8.50). I decided to contrast my pint of Kronenburg with a healthy Thai noodle salad (£6.50). Wow. This was as good as any concoction you’d ever get at a Thai place in Soho. And the presentation was equally impressive. Ola, the Castle’s manager, tells me that the chef (yes they have a chef) is big on presentation and people often make dinner reservations here.
My friend opted for the roast poussin (that’s a baby chicken to you and me) served with roast veg and mash. It sounds steep at £9.50 but the Castle isn’t mean on portion size. The roast poussin is literally a whole baby chicken. And a tasty one at that. The food comes out very quickly and if you’re in a hurry there is no problem telling a member of staff.
The Castle is one of those places from which your night can go anywhere. For me it was some nice food, a few beers, a heart to heart with an old friend and home to bed by half eleven. But it’s also a good place to start the night before heading out on the tiles as the group of lads in the corner demonstrated. The decision is yours. Either way an enjoyable place to spend an evening....read more
