The Red Lemon Review

Top 10 things we learnt about The Red Lemon Pub:

1) I am of the ‘leave Christmas for Christmas time’ brigade. Perhaps it was this grinchy attitude which meant I was sent along to the Red Lemon for some re-education.

2) The Red Lemon doesn’t appear outwardly festive; it’s tucked away in a residential area off Westbourne Park. There are no garish sparkly lights outside.

3) The first thing that strikes you as you leave the Lapland-like Arctic conditions outside is the crackling of burning wood. Yes, they have an actual real working fireplace with logs aplenty and not an officious health and safety officer in sight to ruin the atmosphere.

4) Your senses are next aroused by the colourful, vivid paintings on the wall by Joseph Coupland Hartley. They might be paintings of a London bus, a poppy field or the London skyline, but your eyes are constantly attracted to them by the explosion of colours. I had to apologise to my plus one for my constant wandering eyes.

5) They do take the word ‘seasonality’ to heart here: they offered heart-warming squash soup and Reindeer burgers when we visited. Poor Rudolph.

6) The simplest of dishes are the best. Take the humble lamb pie – the dish served here had the fluffiest of pastries, they used melt-in-your-mouth lamb meat (not the minced variety) and the richest of gravy ideal on a wintry night.

7) It’s tricky to pass by the festive season without indulging in desserts. The standout choice is their sour cream panna cotta; it just shows how opposites attract like salted caramel, sweet and sour. It’s light and refreshing even Kris Kringle wouldn’t have to worry about his figure.

8) Forget about mulled wine for your tipple, your beverage of choice should be New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It might be the most expensive wine on their menu, but it is worth every penny with its distinctive gooseberry and nettle notes and elegant texture.

9) Alternatively, there was their Port and Portobello bar upstairs, a pop-up bar that opened until Christmas offering a fine selection of port, sherries and local ale paired with stilton and onion marmalade on toast, Welsh rarebit, or mini mince pies. Let’s hope it pops up there for longer.

10) Grumpy old me was positively humming Christmas tunes all the way home by the end of the night.

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
