Sun in Splendour Review

Tucked away on the Portobello road, The Sun in Splendour is a simple and unassuming pub.

Bursting with post-office Notting Hill locals, there seems to be no struggle to fill seats and pack this crammed hideout.

Surprisingly, this is perhaps the Sun’s selling point. The compact seating creates a comfortable intimacy while you’re never far from friendly banter at the bar. A downstairs area - the ‘Secret Garden’ – adheres to this perfectly. Here, a tiny outdoor space is converted with overhead electric heating and romantic candlelight into an exquisite little retreat.

Unfortunately, for more expansive tastes, the scope in food is fairly limited. In its dry delivery of boiled English meat and veg – such as, the chicken breast with leek and maple sauce, new potatoes, green beans and mange tout (£8.90); and steak and ale pie (again) with gravy, new potatoes, green beans, and mange tout (£8.90) – the famished market hawker will be left wondering why they even bothered, although the cost is reasonable.

The in-house draughts of Staropramen, Küppers Kolsch and Greenking, along with the bottled Addlestone, Duvel, and 7% German Westmale do permit a hint of flavour in an otherwise bland selection of food and drink.

Some may argue that there is little reason to traipse around Portobello market trying to find this place, unless that is you’re already well acquainted. The ‘Secret Garden’ is a delightful find, and as a quaint, cosy little haunt, the Sun in Splendour will suffice… but only just. more

“Cozy but spacy; quiet but atmospheric (not including portebllo market avo's); good grub; on quieter nights, the manager likes to go a little old-school with the toons - i'm talking gangStarr, de la soul.”
