Truc Vert Review

Truc Vert is only 2 minutes from the craziness of Oxford Street yet it feels like it’s a million miles away.

Offering a taste of rustic France it’s an oasis in the heart of the city. With simple decor- lots of wood, caramel coloured walls and wine racks full of many a tempting tipple. It’s homely and unpretentious and the food is damn good to boot.

Executive chef and owner, Russell Cameron, clearly takes pride in choosing fine ingredients for the provincial French and Mediterranean menu. It’s full of tantalizing fresh meats, fish and vegetables and is changed daily.

My goats cheese ravioli with chive, parmesan and cream sauce tastes wonderfully home made. It is set off perfectly with a simple green salad and delightful chunky chips that are crispy and well seasoned.

My companion has scotch rib-eye steak with roquette mash potato, Portobello mushroom and pink peppercorn jus. He declares the mashed potato to be one of the best he has ever had- creamy with a hint of roquette which ideally complements the succulent, peppery steak.

Desert raises the bar even higher. You cannot visit this place without sampling the wonders of the strawberry crème brulee. The crispy top, fresh summer strawberries and vanilla cream work together in harmony, it’s the crème brulee to rival all crème brulees. The warm soft chocolate pudding with berry coulis is worth the ten minute wait. Chocolate gushes out when it is cut open and it is swimming in luscious, ripe berries- yum!

Whether you’re after an alfresco coffee, daytime snack or three-course dinner you can’t go far wrong with TrucVert and its delicious, fresh food served in rustic yet chic surroundings.

“Excellent breakfasts (they’re happy for you to use your laptop and hold a business meeting in the quiet calm of the wood-floored main room). Fresh croissants and pastries slip down easily with a frothy cappuccino, but, if you have time, try the cooked breakfast. I don't know how they get eggs and bacon to taste this good, but they’re things of beauty. It can get very busy at lunch, so I'd recommend coming back late afternoon or early evening, when the interior is tranquil and strangely calm, to sample meats and cheeses, or tuck into some classic French cooking like confit duck or their fantastic chicken, which is always on the menu in some guise or other. My particular favourite involves new potatoes, bacon, spinach and a wild mushroom sauce of such earthiness you just want to sniff the dish over and over, but the rather more adventurous lentil, fig and spinach concoction is pretty good too. The menu changes daily so there's always an element of surprise which I very much like.”

Truc Vert prides itself in that all of the many and varied dishes served throughout the day and into the evening are produced on the premises from the finest ingredients. The menu is changed daily so there is always something new or different to sample from their eclectic modern classical cuisine.
