Tibits Review

Tibits is featured in these Guides:

Best for: More vegetarian options than you could shake a celery stick at.

Great: Changing menu; hot chocolate; proximity to Regent Street.

The dictionary definition of a buffet is “a meal at which people serve themselves from various dishes set out on a table, sideboard, or counter”. The dictionary doesn’t have a definition for the noun ‘buffeteer’ because it doesn’t exist, but if it did, I would describe myself as an expert buffeteer.

For me, hearing there is a buffet is on a par with being told that Chelsea has won the Champions League or that chocolate is slimming; read: untold joy. But I know when it comes to self-service I’ve got to be professional. There’s no point rushing in, heaping my plate ineffectually with bulky bread rolls - for reference purposes: always hold these separately - or eagerly doling out extra portions of all my favourites, only to discover this particular buffet hasn’t done them justice.

This Swiss vegetarian restaurant invites diners to pick their own food from the “food boat” (apparently it sounds classier than ‘buffet cart’, and it’s shaped like a boat). Diners tempted to weigh down their plates with vegetarian wares could be caught out. Charged approximately £2.20 per 100g of food, diners spend around £8-£14 on their main meal.

Tibits, I applaud your ingenuity. The buffet element instantly makes diners think they’re getting a great deal. Yet, when it comes to pay, if they’ve chosen to eat their own body weight in food, they’ll pay all right. My friend and I decide to err on the side of caution for our first plate, only to discover at the cashier that bread rolls aren’t included in the weigh in; nice touch.

As with any buffet there are highs and lows: I particularly like the broccoli steamed with canola oil and teriyaki mix; the falafel looks far too neat and pre-formed to taste good, yet it does, very good; antipasti dishes with aubergine and mushrooms are also appealing; but the pumpkin and waldorf salad with cheese fails to turn me to the veg side. Bizarrely, all the desserts – including fruit crumble and rice pudding - are served chilled and I’m left wondering why would vegetarians have such strong opinions against hot stewed fruit and warm, milky desserts?

Food aside, Tibits manages to create an ambience - with pleasing décor to boot - that belies its buffet (sorry, food boat) service. Green or black floral-patterned velour wallpaper decorates feature walls, brightly coloured cushions are scattered across the bench seating along one side of the restaurant, and light fittings that look like coils of steel hang above tables. Downstairs is a children’s play area with comfy sofa seating and a huge vase of lilies at the end of the bar. These are all nice touches to a restaurant that looks suitable snazzy without being intimidating.

Diners have the option to grab a quick bite and Tibits’ Regent Street location (on Heddon street, a small road off Regents Street and self-proclaimed ‘food quarter’ of Regent Street) makes it a handy pit-stop for fading shoppers. But my friend and I happily while away nearly three hours, enjoying good quality Merlot and apple mojitos - which aren’t as good as they sound because, in keeping with its vege-goodie vibe, lots of Tibits’ cocktails include healthy elements; my cocktail has dubious-sounding ‘fitness juice’ as one of its ingredients and tastes like apples that have gone floury - followed by marigold tea and delicious hot chocolate.

By the end of my evening I feel slightly confused. I’ve had a good dinner and caught up with my friend without being hassled by waiting staff but I don’t feel like I usually feel post-buffet. My jeans don’t need unbuttoning and I haven’t got food sweats. To most, this would seem good but I’m also missing the satisfying feeling of accomplishment that I usually experience with buffet eating.

For those who dislike much of what comes with buffets – food trodden in to the floor, buffeteers jostling with each other in competition, and a compulsion to eat and get out of the buffet zone ASAP - Tibits is a welcome anecdote. But take it from a true buffeteer: Tibits is good but it’s not pure buffet.

“Vegetarians generally get a bum deal when it comes to eating out, but this restaurant is brilliant. Really reasonable and very, very tasty. Recommended and that's from a meat eater!”

“This Swiss inspired chic salad bar is new generation Cranks and probably where Cranks would be now had they not suffered in the hands of Nando's owners. Unlike the salad bars at Fresh and Wild and Wholefood Market there is a limit on the plate price so you are spared the shock to your debit card if you have overdone the heavy herb potatoes dishes, pasta and spiced rice dishes. Tibit's dishes are in any case far more inspired and titilating on the taste buds. Tibits healthiness is subtle and understated and they avoid all that pompous organic worthiness and self righteousnes that many lesser places use to try to make you forgive the culinary amateurishness of their dishes. All in all this is a comfortable place to eat where you are just as likely to find a besuited hedge fund manager fighting to save his career as you would a bohemian looking hard core vegan recording artist or celebrity. The food is a definate step upward without being pretentiious and expensive. I have no hesitation in recommending Tibits as a healthy lunchtime or pre theatre solution to clients at our Harley Street Nutrition clinic. Yvonne.”
