The Luggage Room Review

Book a table at The Luggage Room

Best for: chic cocktails.

Great:…..for some more cocktails.

Darren and Sofia are out in the streets of a London they love, in an unusually warm spring night, tired and lazily searching for something to do.

They are walking randomly through the city streets, looking for a quiet, discreet, tasteful cocktail bar in Mayfair where they can possibly have a drink.

What they don’t want are a standard pub - full of “after hours staff” let out of the office to breathe air before the following hard day of monotonous work - or a usual restaurant - full of kids and quarrelling couples - or the “trendy” bar where everybody does exactly the same thing, is dressed exactly the same way, and drinks exactly the same drinks.

They walk, hand in hand, talking just enough to make the other aware of their existence. Running away from the lively, boisterous Oxford Street, in search of repair and the right atmosphere, they jump into Bond Street towards Grosvenor Square.

The loud grandness of the Marriott Hotel almost literally slaps them in the face, waking them from their lethargy. And to the side of this vast building, hidden discreetly in its shadow, is a black door with the words “The Luggage Room” labelled upon it.

Sofia looks at Darren and, gently pushing him towards the secret door, conveys with mere facial expressions that whatever mysteries lie behind that small, quite ordinary, English door must be worth trying. Tickled by curiosity, she feels like Alice in the Wonderland.

Darren knocks and almost immediately the door is answered by a young chap, in chequered green and black trousers, white shirt and black suspenders.

The pair are amused and walk into a small, dark corridor, into a large room made up of various enclaves.

It is a bar, elegant and decorated in pure English style, with the quite affected willingness to represent a hotel luggage room, naturally. Sofia feels even more like Alice, now. “Where am I?” she asks herself, and importantly, “What is about to happen?”

At the bar the personnel are busy mixing, measuring, shaking, and cutting blocks of the purest ice, to prepare what seems to be more like potions and remedies than cocktails.

Beautiful waitresses welcome guests into the dark brown, leathered studded ambience. Sofia and Darren sit down sheepishly and order cocktails based on Champagne and Talisker whisky.

The beverages are extremely good, but the Scotch egg and crisps served with them are much less in tune with the luxurious ambience. Nevertheless, our protagonists are hungry and devour the food, despite finding the match not quite made in heaven. A lovely creamy Stilton, though, served in a little stoneware pot with jam and toasted bread soldiers, brings joy back to the table and the two undertake a dissertation about the best cheeses in the world.

Oh, these cocktails are quite good: Alice would have definitely shrunk to the minimum size possible by drinking the particularly delicious, inviting and refreshing “Luggage cocktail”!

The earthy taste of Talisker inebriates Darren’s mind: “Penultimate Word” is the name of his cocktail, but Darren doesn’t have any words left, not one.

The list of beverages is long and mighty, not a cheap ride, but a memorable one. Martinis, Shorts, Beers, Wines and an infinite list of any type of whisky, gins and cognac one can think of. There is also Negroni, a £12.50 shot of quite common Italian vermouth.

The Luggage Room is empty of suitcases: instead, nothing much is happening, just two friends to the right, and a group of Americans who depart quite soon after a couple of drinks.

Sofia takes Darren’s hand and looks at him, sweetly: it is time to go!

Outside the night is brighter, much brighter than before; the two are about to walk back towards the busy lights of the metropolis.

Darren is walking in front whilst Sofia trots behind: wait a minute, does she spy a big white bunny with a large, large, clock?! Sofia increases her pace, but stops for one glance back at the now shut, mysterious black door!
