Le Boudin Blanc Review

Unlike many other French restaurants in London, which serve mediocre food and have little or no atmosphere, Le Boudin Blanc smacks of the authentic French gastronomic experience. The moment you step into the restaurant from Mayfair's romantic Shepherds Market, you feel like you have been transported miles southward into the culinary heart of France.

Having been greeted in French by charming staff, and a refreshing smile, you are whisked through to the dining room. The bare tables are candle-lit, and, despite the rooms wooden floors, the restaurant's atmosphere is cosy and welcoming. With typical gallic pictures adorning every single inch of the walls, the room assumes a rustic clutter which is the perfect antidote to today's decorative trend of austere minimalism.

Thankfully, the menu does not disappoint and it is backed up with an impressive and varied cellar which includes half a dozen Armangnacs dating back to 1947, the most expensive of which is £1595. A reasonable selection of wines by the glass are also available including Yarra Valley, Coldstream Hills and an Australian Merlot for under £5.

When the meal arrived, after 30 minutes on a packed Saturday night, it was superb. To start, the ravioli of smoked mozzarella and panceta, with wild mushroom and rosemary sauce (£9.95) was fantastic. This was followed by an enormous Ribeye steak served with a black peppercorn sauce (£13.95) cooked to perfection despite being a good three inches thick. The tasting of three flavoured crème brulees (£5.90) for pudding was the perfect end to a delicious meal.

In short, Le Boudin Blanc has an incredible atmosphere matched by its delightful food. If their were more French restaurants like this in England, Eurostar would have gone out of business many years ago.

“We have visited before and decided to take some family friends for a night out, but unfortunately tonight was a disaster. The dining room was very loud, the lights flicked on and off and worst of all was the service. We waited 40 minutes to order food & wine, the wine wasn't provided until after we were half way through the first course, 30 minutes later... disinterest prevailed. Food was good but not spectacular. Disappointing experience and we will be unlikely to return.”

“For 3 of 6 nights in Dec 2001 after 9/11 we stayed in Mayfair... best restaurant one can imagine... good value... can't wait to leave Memphis, TN for our next visit in May, 2007... when you save a bistro card for 5 years, it has to be good!”
