Chisou Review

Chisou is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things you need to know about Chisou Japanese restaurant:

1) Oxford Street and Regent Street shopping is so tantalisingly close to the restaurant that a dainty skip from the Apple Store, Top Shop or Nike Town will have you somersaulting through its front door before you can blurt “OMG, it’s the January sales!!”

2) Aside from the calm removal of coats at said door, and the hot, cleansing towel delivered to the table in order to wipe away the grubby vestiges of work/shopping, the freneticism of the aforementioned shopping streets is also seen inside the restaurant. Black cloaked staff hurriedly fill sake glasses and offer up extravagant plates of seafood with a courteous bow. Fast food, done fancy.

3) Personnel alacrity; Tube station proximity; two-person restaurant seating arrangements; you can slot this one firmly in the ‘quick catch-up’ dining category.

4) And for a touch of close quarter theatre, book a stool at the bar and watch the chef perform vignettes from his extensive oeuvre.

5) The restaurant’s interior is modern, understated, and held together by dark slate floors and the occasional use of light wood. Thankfully, a minimal amount of gimmicky faux Japanese lanterns have been installed.

6) There’s no question that salt-flecked edamame is the Japanese version of Pringles. Once I’d popped, well, you know what happened.

7) The menu is confusingly complex, while the food itself is confusing OR complex. The beautifully presented baby spinach Horenso salad is a real surprise. It arrives in the shape of a flower, and manages to be simultaneously soft and crunchy, nutty yet zesty (that’ll be the spicy prawns, sweet carrots, and Yuzu vinaigrette drizzling then). But then, regrettably, the black cod proves pancake-doughy, and the seafood tartare is no greater than the sum of its parts (and a tricky opponent when using my nemesis: chopsticks).

8) The five-fish sashimi cannot fail to bring a salubrious glow to your life. The Junmai sake will have the same effect, although possibly not so much the next morning (note: Chisou has one of the best sake selections in all of London).

9) The rainbow maki is a kaleidoscope of flavour and colour; a dish made for indecisive diners much like myself.

10) We were greedy. Don’t be like us. Skip dessert and the second jug of sake, otherwise prepare for buttock clenching when a bill exceeding £200 is dropped in your lap.
