Berry Bar & Lounge Review

Book a table at Berry Bar & Lounge

Best for: feeling very British, a quiet drink in Mayfair.

Great: gin cocktails in teacups, sumptuous chicken nuggets, snuggly suede sofas.

My boyfriend tries to sum up our evening as ‘awesome’. Awesome?! I smack him round the head. ‘AWESOME???’ I shout. How very dare you.

This is spiffing, darling. This is very lovely. This is smashing, super, wonderful, all said with a Dervla Kirwan M&S posh voice.

What could be more British? Gin, the famous and infamous tipple of choice for our fair countrymen and women throughout history (which even prompted an Act and a Craze), coupled with afternoon tea, that delightful institution of piles of sandwiches, scones and cakes. This is not ‘awesome, man’, all peanut butter, cinnamon, pastrami and low calorie beer. This is elegant gin cocktails served in teacups with saucers; OXO cube tins and model ships on the mantelpiece; Earl Grey infused spirits, scones and fish and chips. All set in an 18th century Georgian townhouse.

Welcome to Berry Bar & Lounge, named after the juniper berry, in Green Park’s Hilton Hotel. This is my cup of tea, well, an Earl Grey Martini served in a frozen tea pot and supped from a glass teacup, to be precise.

Formerly Tiger Green Bar, the venue has had a Union Jack makeover to reveal a most British bar boasting gin drinks, afternoon tea, bar snacks and more substantial bites.

Bar supervisor Simon Thompson is proud of the concept, and enthuses: ‘When I think of London I think of gin and afternoon tea and I wanted to try and bring them together. We’re the only place in London that does a gin afternoon tea, as far as I know.’

Burly Simon has literally just had the menus printed for the revamped bar and my boyfriend and I quickly pick our first drinks of the night: the Earl Grey Martini and the London Lemonade. The former is the house signature cocktail, a mix of Earl Grey Beefeater gin with lemon juice and syrup de gomme, while the lemonade is a refreshing concoction of No 3 gin and elderflower with lemon and a sprig of thyme.

We settle down into our comfortable green suede sofa and note the 1970s style brown check carpet and the cabinets housing old clocks and retro OXO tins. Very British. But it doesn’t feel overdone. It’s an open yet cosy space, a neutral hotel lobby sort of bar but with little accents that remind you of the British menu served here, and that we’re in a luxury hotel in Mayfair, not a random upmarket hotel in Swindon or Bournemouth. It’s quiet for a Friday night and apparently we’ve just missed the pre-theatre rush.

My boyfriend sips his London Lemonade while tapping me on the shoulder and making the ‘I’m hungry’ face, which if I’m honest, seems to be a permanent expression of his.

Unfortunately we’re too late for afternoon tea (priced at a reasonable £24.50) so we order some bar snacks instead.

Tender scallops with soy sauce, delicate and moist fish and chips, lamb kebabs with peppered yogurt and king prawns in a light batter arrive at our table. The bar menu is dominated by fish and seafood and when we ask if there are any other meaty options the chef obliges with probably the best chicken nuggets I’ve ever tasted. These are no mass produced orange breadcrumb coated bits of chicken from the Colonel. These are piping hot moist and succulent little balls of loveliness (sorry, slipping into my Dervla routine again).

We wash them down with fragrant Dirty Martinis (that’s an oxymoron isn’t it? But it’s true! The olives and fresh basil superbly shaken with gin and vermouth get my nose twitching a la Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, from Perfume - and in a good not a bad way) and Ginger Fizz.

Our bellies full and livers gently aching, we say good night to Simon and the spiffing gin bar. I’m already thinking about returning to get my true London fix of gin and afternoon tea. That is until my boyfriend mutters that nasty A word from across the Pond and I whack the ‘I’m hungry’ expression off his face once and for all.
