28-50 Wine Workshop & Kitchen Review

28-50 Wine Workshop & Kitchen is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things we learnt about 28-50 restaurant and wine bar when we visited:

1) There’s no better way to start a meal than with a glass of fizz. This is the third branch of the restaurant to open but it’s the only one with a champagne bar – serving more than 40 types.

2) Make use of your sommelier. Fish for starter, lamb for main? Wine choices can be tricky especially when your knowledge barely extends to knowing that wine can be white, red or pink. Best to leave it to the professionals.

3) While the food is very reasonably priced, the wines reach an eye-watering price per glass so make sure you discuss budget with your sommelier. Small glasses go up to around £24 – that’s got to be some good vino.

4) Industrial can be cosy. Brick walls, oil lamp style lighting, rough wood and metal don’t sound like a recipe for a warm, inviting atmosphere, but somehow they are.

5) The starters list is heavenly: tuna nicoise, tender perfection, served with quail’s eggs and olives; baby beetroot salad, an earthy, sweet plate of deliciousness; slight pangs of food envy when spying the neighbouring table’s seafood platter though.

6) This is French bistro cooking and the food is rich. A confit duck leg and a lamb shank are succulent and flavoursome, and perfectly accompanied by dense, fruity red wines.

7) Dessert wines might be an acquired taste though. While my comrade thought a sweet nectar was divine, my port was a shock to the system – clearly I don’t possess such a sophisticated palate.

8) The desserts themselves, however, are a hit all round. Portions aren’t huge but after those mains there isn’t much room left anyway. The pistachio crème brulee is a creamy delight, although co be presented a little better – a lonely, white ramekin is a little disappointing after such beautiful presentation of other dishes.

9) The staff at 28-50 cannot be faulted. Friendly and chatty without being over the top, and attentive without making you feel smothered. They all seem genuinely interested in your experience.

10) If in doubt, take a recommendation. We were well steered on starter and main choices (I rarely need help with dessert – this is my area of expertise, proved by my pro choice of fig poached in red wine, which made me feel all festive and warm).
