The Providores & Tapa Room Review

Top 10 things to know about The Providores and Tapa Room:

1) Think New Zealand and you think of: rugby? The Haka? Peter Jackson’s Hobbits running around gorgeous landscapes? In fact, their most famous export is another Peter, Peter Gordon, Europe’s father of fusion cuisine.

2) He made fusion sexy with the Sugar Club in the 1990s and then The Providores from 2001. Yes, this year it’s celebrating 13 years of charming London taste buds.

3) Studying the menu, you know Peter suffers from logorrhoea. In fact if I wrote the whole menu down, I wouldn’t have space to review the food. Brevity of words is more in vogue these days, but given the complexities of his dishes, this is understandable.

4) The Tapa Room downstairs is the more fun-loving side of Peter; it’s mostly about small sharing plates, larger groups and noisy banter. The Providores part upstairs is Peter in his serious chef mode; complex main courses that are at least two lines long.

5) The dining room upstairs might be bland for some, as it’s mostly white walls with paintings dotted around; although you couldn’t tell it’s been around for 13 years, as it looks so timeless (just like me).

6) If you doubt the owner is a well-travelled man, you just need to study the tapas dishes: Sichuan baby squid, Norfolk black chicken leg, chorizo croquettes and seared yellow fin tuna. Yes, I tried them all and they were all stupendous in their individual ways.

7) My burgeoning bromance with Peter took a slight hiatus with the Laksa main. The soup was more of a curry consistence rather than a spicy soup and the soba noodles just didn’t have the bounce factor you expect in such a dish.

8) By the time I finished desserts, the only thing that was burgeoning was my waistline. I managed to try all 7 desserts, yes that’s right, SEVEN DESSERTS. This is as difficult as picking your favourite child, but the highlight was the strawberry and long pepper compote with Golden Crunch ice-cream that you could eat forever and ever.

9) To top all this, they have the largest selection of New Zealand wine in Europe. The Kalex Pinot Gris just glowed in my mouth.

10) After reading the previous 9 points, you probably realise I have a man-crush on the very talented Peter Gordon. If you are reading this Peter, call me!
