The Lockhart Review

Top 10 things we discovered about The Lockhart bar & kitchen when we visited:

1) What do you get when you cross rustic cooking from Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico with the finesse and intelligent flair of an upscale London restaurant? Smoked meats, sticky barbeque sauces, creamy and comforting soul food, all presented beautifully and tasting delicious.

2) The Lockhart has an all-star cast, with Bunmi, previous manager at LIMA and maître d’ at Michelin-star restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, at the helm.

3) Joining him is Head Chef Andrew Justice, quarter finalist of MasterChef The Professionals 2010, fresh faced from his tour of the southern American states.

4) Setting? Think glam and funky French country kitchen.

5) Cocktails - devised by award-winning Texan mixologist Eddie Campbell - influenced by Southwest US flavours and British produce. Choose the Oaxaca Gold - mezcal, mango jalapeno puree, fresh lime and a pinch of chilli - because it’s zingy!

6) Southwest US food is soul food and best eaten with your fingers. Mop up spicy Cajun dipping sauce with soft and fluffy crab hush puppies and get downright messy with the chicken wings and ‘Lockhart’ BBQ sauce.

7) A main dish of sea bass, lobster, Mexican chorizo, crayfish bouillabaisse and summer greens showcases Andrew Justice’s skill and talent as a chef. Delicate, light, fresh and full of true American soul.

8) Mac ‘n’ cheese is an icon of the southwest American flavour. The Lockhart’s version is creamy, cheesy, spicy, and comes with house smoked bacon sprinkled on top. Need I say more?

9) If you’ve got space, order the most American of desserts: apple and cinnamon doughnuts. Filled with apple puree and dusted with cinnamon sugar, these doughnuts come with a tooth-achingly sweet butterscotch sauce.

10) Set up by two passionate Texan couples, The Lockhart stands out in London, regardless of the fact that the city is already saturated with American restaurants. This is because they are offering something refreshingly different: refined, yet weirdly also big and brash, soulful American food.
