Quebec Review

Located near Marble Arch tube Station, at the top end of Oxford Street, The Quebec, the oldest gay pub in London, opened in 1946 And has been managed by Tony for over 10 years.

In a traditional British style, the pub offers two large floors, both recently newly refurbished.

A 20 metre long bar will welcome you as you arrive. Large sofas, framed pictures and warm lighting are situated all around the pub.

Downstairs has a darker atmosphere and usually opens from 8 pm, there is a second bar, a dance floor, and a chill out area.

The friendliness of the place and its absence of prejudice have made The Quebec a popular choice among the older gay male crowd.

There is no dress code, no door charge just a cosy and welcoming atmosphere available seven days of the week.

“Very nice place to visit very friendly and there's allways a lot off fresh new people going there evey week . We have been going there for over ten years now . I all ways tell a lot of people about the Quebec but a lot of people say about the down stairs smelling of urine which is true . But now I hear it's going to be all refurbishe'd cannot wait . The up stairs was done nicely a few years ago . So it will be a feel good factor now that the down stairs is done so enjoy it every one yours Gary carlton ”

“My wife and I visited after a mornings shopping, the pub and atmosphere was smashing, the sandwiches from the carvery were delicious. The staff were a little distant bordering on unfriendly but served us quickly. during the three drinks and a meal we both had the need to visit the loo. My wife had no complaints but I was almost sick when I visited the men's toilets the stench was over powering and extremely unpleasant. I have run pubs for 30 years and I know that there are inexpensive odour killers. This stink was totally avoidable and due to bad hygiene practices. a lovely visit ruined by putrid toilets.”

“I find this place a very relaxing place to be in. I have attended many Karaoke nights here on a Monday, and found it enjoyable. And the fact that you can get a song in rather than wait an eternity like other places The clientelle are of a certain age but in some way it is part of its charm. Young people think they invented Gay, but some of the Men who frequent this Pub have lived through less liberal times (like myself) and its good to reminisce with them about the Good old days, or the bad depending on how you perceive it. It is refreshing to just be allowed to be yourself. On a negative point I find that a lot of the young guys who go in there are a bit shonky, and sadly prey upon the older guy, but dont let this put you off. Just be aware”

“I've been a Quebec regular for about 10 years. I used to live 5 minutes walk from it, and still return to what feels like my local. My straight friends love it, as do the members of my family that have visited. The bar staff are pretty good. The ones that aren't don't survive long. Personally I think that James has got the balance about right. Yes, some of the older guys see everybody under 30 as a rent, but that’s not unique to the Quebec. Personally I feel that the Quebec achieves something none of the other bars do, they don’t set themselves up to be anything other than a traditional bar catering for an older age group. I’ve seen Darren and his colleagues deal extremely diplomatically with people that really are out of order, and I think without exception the bar staff will pour my drink once they know it, without the need to for me to wave a flag or otherwise attract their attention. I've looked in a lot of places to find a bar like the Quebec. It isn’t perfect, but it’s close”

“I used to go to the Quebec most weekends and enjoy the company. New bar staff that speak english are needed very badly. Its such a shame this once great gay pub has gone down the pan.”

“Hoping to be at The Quebec later this month (June, 2009) and hoping to have a good time as I always do when visiting the Quebec. It would be good if Adil is there again. Looking forward to catching up with the crowd.”

“I spent the early afternoon of last saturday in the Quebec with a friend. The old atmosphere had gone. The two large-screen television sets were both tuned to a rugby game, which none of the older (regular) patrons was watching. However, a group of seven or more male-female couples (six particularly raucous women and one maid cuddling with her man) were watching and yelling their approval and other comments. My conclusion: Nobody goes to a pub to watch television, except members of coaching parties. Sports addicts go to their own local or watch it at home. Pub patrons go to a pub to have a drink, to meet friends, to chat, or just to have a lone drink in a friendly atmosphere. Must we say goodbye to the Quebec? Has the Quebec turned into a pub for charabanc parties?”

“Very friendly bar staff, quick to serve, not standing around preening as in other bars, which seems to be the current trend in other less conducive places. Good atmosphere, as I visisted Quebec on a Monday evening, when Karaoke was in full flow. Almost like being in your local.”

“You either love or hate it. You wouldn't think so but the old guys there actually have an attitude problem. People will assume you are a rent boy if you are under 40 years old! Good music in the basement and usually very busy. Friendly bar staff (most).”

“The Qubec claims to be the oldest gay bar in London but in fact that should just refer to the clientelle, as both the Queens Head in Chelsea and the William IVth in Hampstead pre-date it, having been around before WW II. That said, the Quebec is the best bar in Europe for older gay men and their admirers although late opening hours and loud music in the cruisy bar downstairs mean that this has brought in a younger crowd after midnight, especially at weekends.”

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
