Top 10 things you need to know about Yasmeen restaurant in St John’s Wood:

1) Some days you yearn for meat and nothing but steak will do. On some balmy nights a waft of love rides the city breeze, so only a London rooftop bar can provide romance. And then, on some occasions, the lure of twilight draws you towards the dancefloor at London’s best clubs.

2) But sometimes, you just want to amble your way through the post-work hours; limp-limbed and carefree, untroubled by the brash urban existence that took up your day. You’re never going to finish with London, so kick back, wear some slacks, and meander around a table of Lebanese slow food, the opposite of fast food.

3) At Yasmeen - an understated, conservative-posh, suburban family restaurant - the pace of life is not quite as quick as, say, a glacier. You’re encouraged to suspend all notions of time and chill the heck out. Is it a coincidence that Yasmeen means “jasmine”, which is an altogether soothing herb?

4) The menu is enormous, providing three pages of mezze starters alone; many vegetarian; most interchangeable. So order a bunch (they’re inexpensive), gather some loved ones, and nibble away at the healthy tabouleh, the salubriously spicy batata harra potatoes, and the smoked aubergine moutabel (a close relative of baba ganoush).

5) Halloumi cheese with sesame seeds: not optional; must have. Do as you’re told!

6) The al fresco patio is a lovely place for idle chit chat - the chatio, perhaps? - and the front conservatory allows plenty of early evening light for admiring the BMWs and Porsches parked outside.

7) Aging men wearing collared shirts and thick, exotic accents plunge warm flat breads into acres of dips and fill their tanned cheeks with dry, mealy kibbeh and falafel, totally unfazed by the occasional high pitched sound of children and their families at the rear of the restaurant. For everyone present, this is an event, not a meal.

8) The full bodied Lebanese grenache-merlot - the Catherine Zeta-Jones of wine - combines with the grilled chicken and lamb platter to put all into a pleasant stupor.

9) And if your body can willingly accept dessert after such a feast, the gelatinous rose water rice pudding tastes like the smell of every aromatic bar of soap you’ve wanted to eat.
