The Elgin Review
Book a table at The Elgin
Neatly positioned on the corner of Elgin Avenue – a mere spitting distance from Maida Vale tube station – sits The Elgin, a bar that has grown popular as a rendezvous for local professionals.
Inside is small but spacious. Low wooden tables offer seating for large parties and a comfy seclusion in the far corner is ideal for that regenerative early morning espresso and browse at the papers. A combination of acoustic guitars and deep house oozes from the speakers at just the right volume.
A recommended cocktail list at the bar includes the usual favourites – Long Island, Bellini, Mojito, Woo Woo, Sex on the Beach – but nothing original. On draught, there is the usual line-up of Stella, Kronenburg, Guinness and John Smiths, with Hoegaarden thrown in for good measure.
Food in The Elgin is reasonably priced, with char-grilled burgers or a rib eye coming in at under a tenner, and the portions are fairly generous. At present they have a great lunchtime offer that includes the special plus one drink (or half lager) for £5.50. TV and magazines are on display, as well as a selection of board games for a £5 deposit.
The Elgin staff seem relaxed, well presented, and straightforward – and with three of them behind the bar on weekends, service is always fast.
For a night of debauched revelry, you’d probably do better elsewhere…but then you are in Maida Vale, London’s new ‘Nappy Valley’. This bar allows you to entertain a group of mates or work colleagues without the hassle of long queues to get in, get served, and get drunk. Open till 1 on weekends, The Elgin is a decent option if you’re already in the area and fancy a composed, good looking environment....read more
