Velo Review

Best for: speed, simplicity and healthy food.

Great: glimpse of the future; healthy fast food in a relaxed environment.

Nowadays, I often find it hard to get really positive about the future. I accept there have been some good developments over the past few years – the rise of microbreweries, the fall of tex-mex and the proliferation of just-mex, and the fact that wasabi peas are now available everywhere – but mainly the future is looking a bit grim.

In the present, global warming means that, in the UK, we now live in perpetual winter, we are all hooked on horse meat, and if you live in London, Boris Johnson is the mayor.

But never fear, fellow Londoners, there is some good on the horizon. Velo, a fast food Vietnamese restaurant near London Bridge, could be a glimpse of fast-food future that does not clog your arteries, encourage obesity and generally ensure that we will die before our parents, frothing at the mouths with a Macky Dee burger clutched in a bloated hands.

Velo works a little bit like Argos, not in the way that you immediately feel all happiness being sucked out of you as soon as you enter, but in the way that you order your food from a machine (you can order from a person instead if you are a technophobe) and then watch the state of your order on a screen at the front until your number goes from ‘cooking’ to ‘collection’. Then you walk proudly to the front, or, if you are eating in, it gets brought over to your table; although this element may need some honing as a slightly confused waitress kept trying to bring us someone else’s dinner.

By day, I imagine Velo looks like many of these new Asian inspired food chains - such as Itsu, or Abokado - where you can get a healthy lunch for about a fiver; clean, minimalist, with the option of prepared meals to pick up and grab or food ordered from the counter (although unusually this is cooked on order).

By night, it is clear that some effort has been made to make Velo into more of a restaurant than a café, with candles on the tables and dimmed lighting. It’s rather sweet really, like someone trying to woo you on a date with a carefully thought out mixtape.

The food was good and very reasonably priced, in particular the summer rolls - Vietnam’s healthy equivalent of spring rolls - which were lovely. The mains were well under a tenner and were large portions, but because Vietnamese food is very fresh tasting and not fatty, you’re unlikely to eat yourself into a painful food coma, which has happened to me a few too many times in China Town.

Clearly the word is out about Velo as well, as there was a constant queue of people waiting for their takeaway as I ate my dinner, slightly disconcerting when you’re sucking soupy noodles; but it felt buzzy and fast paced. The tables were all full and the atmosphere was relaxed, it’s a nice way to grab a quick, tasty bite to eat in the area.

So the future may not be bright in some respects; unemployment is rising; there may inevitably be another series of Big Brother; and it’s possible that we will not see one day of sunshine ever again; but at least we can console ourselves with cheap good food, and, of course, wasabi peas.
