Top 10 things you need to know about Tom's Kitchen HMS Belfast:

1)  You can be excused for suffering delusions of grandeur when you ascend the steps of this alfresco bar and restaurant on the banks of the river Thames. With such spectacular 360-degree views to enjoy, you could imagine yourself as Lord Nelson sailing past the Tower of London to battle Napoleon.

2)  Whether you pick port or starboard side for your visit depends on your mood. The Tower Bridge view is majestic, but that area is noisy with party music; whilst the West End view is introspective, especially thanks to the picturesque sunset and quieter tables for cosy chats.

3)  Patience is indeed a virtue. There will be many thirsty seafarers waiting to be served by the Captain at the bar, especially when sunny weather saunters into London town. And they don't take reservations, even if you’re Blackbeard.

4)  You’re not restricted to just rum rations. They have a limited but fine selection of wines, spirits, beers and even hot drinks, such as hot chocolate, if you’re not familiar with windswept conditions.

5)  The real prized trophies are the cocktails. You can find fantastic beasts like the Kraken, which is Four Roses bourbon topped up with Curious Brew stout and tamed with some sumptuous maple syrup.

6)  If you’re feeling a bit seasick, there’s always the Lifeboat Sidecar to wake you up with a sharp taste of blackberry, vanilla-infused cognac and Cointreau. The large amounts of fruits will no doubt protect against scurvy.

7)  The HMS Belfast next door looks sturdy and perhaps a bit dated; the opposite of how you’ll feel if you order the HMS Bellini cocktail. With peaches, vodka, lemongrass and prosecco, this light concoction won't make you feel like you've been tied down with the ship's anchor.

8)  They offer some of the most luxurious food rations here: their “from the sea” sharing board includes beautifully cured salmon, superbly fresh crabmeat and heavenly smoked mackerel pate.

9)  Service can be over-attentive. They expect you to have the drinking capacity of Captain Hook; second drinks are offered well in advance of finishing your first round.

10) When you’re a sailor, you need to pray to the weather gods. There is no hiding place at Tom's rooftop bar; visiting is highly recommended but do pray to the sun gods before you begin your voyage.
