The George Inn Yard Review

Now call me narrow minded, but I don’t associate the National Trust with having a good time. Shuffling around mouldy old houses once owned by capitalist exploiters, yes. So I wasn’t brimming over with enthusiasm at visiting a pub owned by said fusty organisation.

But The George Inn is something to behold. As you enter the courtyard from Borough High Street, it really is like stepping back in time (provided you avert your eyes from the modern office block to the left). Rickety galleries, lattice windows, warped oak beams, the George has the “Olde English” checklist fully ticked. In fact, it is London’s only surviving galleried inn. It’s easy to imagine the highwayman Dick Turpin sinking half a dozen by the fire, before staggering upstairs to make whoopee with his doxy. Apparently Dickens used to frequent the middle bar, which was then a coffee house. There are no longer inn rooms upstairs, but there is a restaurant.

The courtyard itself offers a huge outside drinking place, sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the streets, and is consequently always packed on summer evenings, at which times you can get served from the handy outside bar hatch. This happily avoids going in, because… well, there’s a bit of a problem with the pub’s internal dimensions. As Dick’s doxy herself might have said, I have no problem with the length, but I’d prefer a bit more breadth. The pub used to be three times as big, before the Great Northern Railway knocked lots of it down, and what’s left is essentially three bars in a long thin line. You have to walk everywhere sideways like a crab, except crabs don’t have to go “sorry, excuse me” all the time.

The toilets are in an outhouse, so you don’t need to struggle through crowds to get to them, but on the downside, they are what estate agents euphemistically call ‘basic’. The pub boasts its very own George Ale, which isn’t half bad.

The George is worth seeking out if you fancy something a bit different one night, because it really does possess what the National Trust describe as “a strong period atmosphere”, one so strong, in fact, that you might, for a brief period of inebriation, forget what period we are living in, fart loudly and cry “hail the Young Pretender!”

“Lovely old pub - reasonable food and a massive courtyard - a real suntrap in summer. And hidden away down a little courtyard, so away from the hussle and bussle of Borough High St. Old, wonky floors and beautiful timber beams - really quite special.”
