The Bridge Lounge & Dining Room Review

The Camel looked down the barrel of the gun and knew that his number was up. On the day of his funeral he was wrapped up in scaffolding to begin the process of metamorphosis into: the Bridge.

It is no wonder that this former sports bar has changed its name to the Bridge, as it has one of the best views of Tower Bridge. Well, at least, when the tree across the street isn’t in blossom.

The bar, in the middle of the ground floor, is encircled by wooden tables and chairs. The walls, especially the one leading up the staircase, are filled with works of photographic art. The dining/lounge area at the top of the stairs, has a homely and spacious feel to it.

When I went there with my restaurant buddy it was packed with a mix of after work drinkers, groups of friends, and couples in different stages of their relationship. One overwhelming characteristic that they all shared was that they were merry. And that’s not just because Christmas was around the corner. It was because they were in a venue that has a great atmosphere.

Their food menu is made up of different styles of sandwiches and traditional main courses. As I was preparing for a night of heavy drinking I opted for their home-made beef burger, topped with bacon and Cheddar cheese. It is stacked so high that you need to give it a good squeeze to get it in your mouth. But once inside, you realise that it was worth the extra stretch. The meat is grilled in such a way that all the juices have been trapped inside. It hit the spot. But, if like my dinner pal, you want something a bit less pubby, then turn to the specials board. The salmon with leek and Vermouth sauce was prepared to restaurant standard. In short, this is an ideal place to go for a drink and a tasty meal on any day of the week.

“Terrible pub. You would hope that because it is right opposite Potters Field and near to Tower Bridge that there might be a bit of an atmosphere but this pub doesn't even have music. It's like walking into a funeral wake. Everyone looks so bleeding miserable. Including the bar staff. Don't bother.”

“The food is nice, but the place is always a bit dead during the week and the weekend. It's a bit quiet, which is good if you want to have a meal without being disturbed. Bad if you want to socialise. I went to the Bridge last Saturday and we were the only people in the bar for three hours! It also seems a bit stuffy. I can't help but think the place would attract more customers if it loosened up it's image. It's poshness is liable to alienate a lot of customers who are just looking for a relaxing night out.”

“Went to the Bridge Lounge last Sunday for lunch and have to say it was pretty good. My only surprise was how quiet it seemed to be but then I guess most people would have been out Christmas shopping. New owners and the Camel (RIP) is no more. Definitely worth a look.”

“Thought my local deserved a good rap, much the same as the other Camel bars in London. Great music and good mix of people, great cocktails and daily Happy Hour. Plenty of screens, but I wouldn''t class it as a "sports bar" they just show the major events. But the best thing is their food and service - this is beyond pub grub and is well worth a try!”
