Pulia Review

Top 10 things you need to know about Pulia restaurant:

1) You’re optimistic, so you decide to tackle those things to do in London you’ve been threatening to do since the dawn of time. Your next objective: the Bankside trilogy of Borough Market, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern, in just one day.

2) By lunchtime you’ve conquered only Southwark Cathedral and a small handful of hot raclette cheese from the market. The onset of hunger further exacerbated by irritable people getting in your bloody way!

3) To escape the throng you head down a side street and discover salvation: a portal to an Italian getaway. The door opens and suddenly you’re in Puglia, the heel of Italy. A bright, airy street market kitchen appears like a mirage. Authentic Mediterranean families gather to eat; the staff laugh in Italian; everyone has perfect sun-dried skin.

4) You start a conversation with the waitress despite not realising you spoke Italian. She assures you that you’re not in Kansas any more, Dorothy. Everything has Puglian provenance: the seasonal ingredients in the back-to-basics food; the concise wine list; the worn, rustic, stucco interior design; the smug lunchtime satisfaction.

5) There’s a long cultural road ahead of you after lunch, so best get some doughy stodge inside you to ward off the evils of lethargy. So what if there’s no menu! You’re already undressing the crocche, the burnt wheat focaccia barese, and the meat-mozzarella panzerotti with your eyes at the counter.

6) Your conscience - aka, the forgotten guest you arrived with - reminds you that your body probably requires nutrients too. A wholesome glass of fennel, green apple and celery juice soon shuts them up.

7) As does the aubergine, tomato and cheese parmigiana. The servings are small, cheap and shareable, so order more.

8) A momentary quandary occurs: lemon, ginger, mandarin, chilli, or thyme olive oil on your chosen dishes? You opt for a dribble of each, and afterwards purchase a bottle at the restaurant’s charming little shop to take away.

9) Following the burrata and strangely moorish dry biscuits, you consider returning later for dinner before the performance at The Globe.

10) Or you could just skip the show and stay in this simple, lazy, Italian lunchtime forever. Weirdly, though, the restaurant does have to close at some point.
