Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) Review

As a person who enjoys eating out, I often find myself subject to the fear of succumbing to the modern disease that is being overweight. 'Fat' has connotations of being jolly and playful and living life as if everything is made of strawberry jelly: but it means so much more than that. Meals and evenings out usually end with the euphoric, satisfied, if not stuffed feeling of fulfillment that comes with the guilty tinge of having eaten just a bit too much. I'm sure you're familiar. After dining out, my conscience is plagued with thoughts of over-eating, followed by worries of becoming rotund, then plump, then fat, then obese (first clinically, then morbidly), until I get to the stage where I have to be air lifted out of my house and invite Channel 4 to film it for a documentary. I'm not sure if anyone has ever died from eating out too often but I’m certain that it's entirely possible.

There are, of course, things that can be avoided to stop oneself from arriving at such a comically tragic and socially stigmatised fate: white bread, red meat, cheese, fried food, booze, Oreo milkshakes. Unfortunately, these were all present on the menu and promptly devoured by myself and my dinner companion at the new Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Clink Street.

Ordinarily I'd be suspicious at eating in a venue that concentrates on just one food stuff. I love a good cliche and 'variety is the spice of life' works as well as any other. But then I suppose if you're good at something, why not focus on that and become great? And so it seems that's exactly what GBK have done.

Fans of the chain will be pleased and surprised when visiting the newest and 50th offering on South London's Clink Street. Gone is the usual self service, half-restaurant, half-fast food joint stylings and in its place is a far more agreeable waiting service that adds infinitely to the dining experience. Friendly and American influenced staff offer enthusiastic advice with an informed and opinionated knowledge on what makes the perfect burger. I opted for a classic BBQ, and just to ensure my wobbly fate, added bacon and mozzarella to the towering and delectable feast.

GBK is famed for it's 'high rise' burgers, and they certainly live up to their name. Even a dinner with the keenest chops and the most vigorous appetite will struggle to polish off one of these bad boys; enter the 'Low rise'. A selection of GBK's most loved offerings now come a full 2 inches shorter than the original, with smaller beef burgers and buns. A great idea for children and people with gastric bands, but If you want the full dining experience it has to be the high rise. I just hope multi-sizing on food doesn't become a restaurant trend; it's infuriating enough trying figure out if I like my coffee 'Venti' or 'Grande' without having to worry about how I like my food sized.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that, given what I've written, I'm some kind of gruesome salad dodger. There is indeed a salad section on the menu at GBK, and you guessed it, I didn't even cast my eyes over it. It's not that I'm adverse to eating salad. I love a crisp mixed leaf, I adore cherry tomatoes and I'm a real sucker for balsamic dressing. No, it's not the salad I have a problem with, it's the idea of ordering it at a burger restaurant. What would be the point? It would be like swimming with your clothes on, or keeping your eyes shut at a strip club, or reading the Daily Mail. It's just wrong. Especially when Angus beef, freshly cut chips and homemade sauces are on offer.

There's no dessert menu available at this restaurant. I think they've quite rightly assumed that once you've conquered your starter, mains and side dishes you'll be quite near to the pointing of bursting. Still it would nice to see an offering of wholesome and simple desserts fitting to the venue. Apple pie and chocolate cheesecake spring to mind. Perhaps those who ordered the salad would be grateful for the option of a third course.

GBK is a feeder that you just can't help but fall for. It wants to be your friend (apparently you can join their 'gang' online, which I imagine to be some kind of food loving cult where followers bath in sour cream and sleep snuggled up with crispy onion rings) and will supply you with whatever your burger laden tastes desire (with their more than reasonable prices, it seems as if they're giving you mates rates too). Just be aware that this is the kind of relationship where you'll need to invest in clothes that are spacious. Clothes you and your stomach can grow into; elasticated waist bands are a must. Well, that or you could join the gym.

“I met a couple of my girlfriends here for our monthly catch up and we ended up staying for ages. The choice of burgers is enormous. It took us about 15 minutes to decide. The onion rings were average, as were the fries, so I'd recommend skipping both, but the burgers are all good. Especially when combined with a Mac's Gold New Zealand beer. Desserts are non-existent too but that's only because the burgers are so enormous. Quirky location, interesting decor.”

“A cute eatery on the v. scary clink street. They've got a great selection of delicious burgers, perfect for a quick bite to eat. Could do with a better selection of beers though.”
