Browns Restaurant & Bar Review
Book a table at Browns Restaurant & Bar
The cool spots along the Thames are extending eastwards. Nowhere is this more plainly in evidence than at Browns Restaurant and Bar, which is nestled under the majesty of Tower Bridge. This smart brasserie with an appealingly classical feel is mere paces away from City Hall and in a serene, traffic-free area. You can hear the lapping sounds of the river if dining outside or the clinking of glass and plates mixed with good chatter if sitting inside.
The stage is nicely set therefore for a range of dishes to tempt and delight diners. An Italian meat antipasti crammed with slices of rich ham and salami and crusty bread is an excellent way to kick off, while a vegetarian equivalent is also on offer. A keen rival for meat lovers’ affections among the starters is the ham hock terrine, its coarseness delightfully offset by the tang of the accompanying piccalilli.
A shining light among the mains is a juicy rack of lamb. There’s a generous amount of meat on it and the flavour is nicely teased out by the smooth accompanying red wine jus. Keep a keen eye out for the specials board too: on this day there was a chicken biryani and accompanying vegetable curry with just the right amount of spice from a chef who honed his skills in India itself. Pleasingly, the portions are good value for their size.
Only those with the strongest wills will be able to resist the dessert line-up. One to really enjoy was a raspberry and chocolate brownie. What’s nice about this choice is that it isn’t too heavy and the gooey warmness of the centrepiece is perfectly offset by the cool vanilla ice cream.
The wine selection is impressively rounded and throws up some unusual treats, one of which was a punchy Gavi di Gavi from Piedmont in Italy.
Located in what was once the vibrant centre of the English tea trade, Browns Restaurant & Bar has fittingly got riverside dining in the bag.

“My wife and I chose this restuarant because of its wonderful location, we thought it woould make a nice spot for an anniversary meal. We found that the service was unacceptably negilent. We waited for over 30 minutes for a waiter to take our order (drinks and food) and another 20 minutes for the bill. Another table waited even longer for their main meal! This was a midweek evening and the restuarant was not even filled. Unless you enjoy being ignored and wondering if you have gone invisible, then I would not bother with this place. The appalling service overshadows any merits that this restuarant has to offer.”

“Fantastic location with one of the best views in London! Bussling atmosphere and fantasic service - we had dinner in the restaurant (I recommend the Chicken and parma ham) followed by drinks in the bar - only criticism is the bar is too comfy and we ended up staying the rest of the evening there! Great selection of drinks too, cocktails to pints!! We will definately go back!!”

“As I live just around the corner I was really pleased when I found out a Browns was opening on Butler's Wharf.
The building is really impressive with some fantastic views over Canary Wharf, London Bridge and The City. The menu, wine list and cocktails are the same as the other restaurants in the chain - good value for money and you know what you are going to get.
The restaurant did have some teething troubles to begin with - the first few times I went it seemed too busy for the staff to cope. However, it has been much better recently with the traditional friendly Browns service.
The bar has recently been given a bit of a transformation with lots of comfy sofas and softer lighting - it makes a real difference and is now a great after work place to enjoy a pint with colleagues.
If you want a good value for money meal and drink then Browns is a great choice.”
