BQ Brasserie Review

March 23 2010: An out of control black cab careers off the road and smashes into the glass-fronted BQ Brasserie during their popular Saturday morning breakfast serving. A couple were sitting near the window, but were not hurt. Police attended the scene, but no arrests were made.

April 8 2010: I went to review BQ Brasserie. The food was good, the surroundings pleasant, the staff friendly. There was no drama, no complaints and the atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed. It was a pleasurable and uneventful evening.

Given an option, most normal people when looking for a peaceful dining experience would probably choose the second of the two scenarios above. I'm not most people.

Halfway through the main course I started getting twitchy. Everything was going so well. While I was on my way to full, my notebook had stayed empty. I longed for a waiter with a gaudy haircut, or a lisp that hindered his explanation of the specials. I craned my neck to listen in on neighbouring diners, hoping to overhear something intimate or salacious. All in vain.

Even a bit of slapstick would have done me, but no plates were dropped on punters laps, and everyone's feet remained disappointingly on the ground. Even the black cabs on Brompton Road refused to cooperate, sailing past resolutely road-bound.

How unfair, I thought. I've got to write this up.

A dilemma I'm sure you'll agree, but I think I've come up with a way of making this review entertaining as well as informative. Here goes...

What's ET short for?
He's got little legs.

BQ Brasserie is a very attractive, wholesome looking joint, clean and bright owing largely to the white interior and (newly-replaced taxi-crack free) full length windows. Don't go thinking it's dull. There are delightful Art Deco touches like windows etched with motifs of grand interiors, and a blackboard illustrated with pretty floral patterns designed no doubt to attract lunching ladies and their Boden-clad babies. Still the quirky details, like chandeliers dripping with faux wax, made it fun, not snooty.

Why did the Mexican throw his wife off a cliff?
Tequila!

The sharing menu looked tempting, and the waiter recommended ordering four or five of the various couscous, salads and cheeses to start. As our small table was already overcrowded so we decided instead to order a la carte and didn't regret it. Highlights included my rich and creamy smoked haddock & creme fraiche risotto, my guest's veritable skyscraper of lamb rump chunks served with spicy couscous, and the homemade tangy raspberry sorbet. I was served a heavenly bitter chocolate and raspberry tart, from their collection of freshly made baked goods displayed teasingly in a glass cabinet at the counter.

Doctor, doctor, I've got problems with my hearing.
What are the symptoms?
Those yellow people on the telly.

There was a very Knightsbridge mix of diners. Of course, there was the meticulously expensive looking woman, too busy raking her manicured fingers through thoroughly mo-joed tresses to eat more than a bite of her tiny plate of pate and toast. Elsewhere were tired tourists toting teddies branded with the logo of nearby Harrods which were larger than their actual kids and friendly looking local families. I've also heard BQ Brasserie is popular with celebrities and recently Keira Knightley was seen eating there (I found it hard to believe too. Keira Knightley. Eating.)

Why do elephants have big ears?
Because Noddy won't pay the ransom.

See what I mean? No Hollywood car crashes, nothing absurd in the slightest, and certainly no laffs. BQ Brasserie is, however, an exceptional restaurant. No joke.

“We live nearby but just recently started going there for weekend brunches (breakfast menu is served until 1PM on weekends, Noon on weekdays). We especially enjoy the Eggs Benedict, though the quality varies a bit depending on the chef. For example, last weekend, the amount of bread was a bit meager, and we felt still rather hungry afterwords (this has never happened after eating Eggs Benedict before!). However, with the right amount of bread, BQB's Eggs Benedict are probably the best I've ever had. They also have nice freshly squeezed juices.”

“Breakfasts are so nice here and the tarts and cakes with a cup of coffee. Yum! Super chilled place to catch up with friends or do some work in the day as well as a good place for a nice dinner”

“I was so impress when we walked through Brompton Quarter Brasserie's door, it is spacious, sophisticated and the staff were friendly and professionals. The food is simple and delicious, they have a gourmet bar that leaves you struggling on what to choose, as everything looks fresh and delicious. I had a selection of home made ice cream for dessert and it is still on the back of my mind. I truly recommend this place and will certainly go back.”
