Hawker’s Bar and Brasserie Review

Book a table at Hawker’s Bar and Brasserie

Top 10 things to know about Hawkers bar & restaurant:

1) Quiet London: that elusive nook within which you can chill, removed from the madness for a few fleeting moments. Finding those treasured nuggets requires time and a little bit of intrepid gall.

2) Heed these words then, especially if you reside in the South-West London, or have an adventurous spirit with the fortitude to venture a mere 30 minutes from Waterloo station.

3) Hawkers bar and restaurant has slightly more atmosphere than, say, a busy library, but then that’s why you came here in the first place: to escape. The elevator soundtrack playing in the background sets the restaurant’s mellow tone.

4) Reminiscent of OXBO restaurant, also of the Hilton Hotel family, Hawkers massages your style receptors. There’s ying to every yang in this corner of tranquility. Exposed ceilings complement aquamarine banquettes; mirrors and brushed steel mute the glare from filament lightbulbs; display cabinets hint of Oliver Bonas; and the #bathroomgoals were probably found on Pinterest.

5) The varied menu has been carefully designed to tickle your on-trend persuasions whilst simultaneously indulging your comfort food yearnings. Discover blackened sea bass and smoked fennel sitting alongside gluten-free linguini, and spiralised vegetables with ceviche. Meanwhile, menu classics such as burgers, steaks and fish and chips mingle on the periphery.

6) Commend the chef for the art of these dishes; beautiful arranged amalgamations of colour and texture.

7) Array of choice and presentation aside, though, the flavour of the food is as subdued as the atmosphere; befitting for anyone who doesn’t deviate too much from the middle ground. The standout plate if you are feeling naughty: beef carpaccio adorned with Parmesan crisps and egg yolk: nom!

8) Add depth to your dinner selection by choosing wisely from the drinks menu: a Park Brewery draught or Beckett’s gin (both local); an Earl Grey martini cocktail (for sweet-tooth sorts); or get stuck into the peachy Pulpo Albarino or the silky, berry-cherry Meimomi pinot noir from the wine list.

9) Sit in the bright bar section for a single drink, and only if the stiff-backed leather booths aren’t all occupied. All other seating seems reserved for weary hotel guests staring vacantly at the big TV (turned off).

10) Hawkers bar and restaurant feels like it’s been mislaid, or at least mistakenly put in a forgotten cul-de-sac off Kingston’s dreary ring road. The glamour, ingredients and prices inside could be Southwark or Shoreditch. But then, you wouldn’t be in Quiet London anymore, Dorothy.
