The Star of Kings Review

Book a table at The Star of Kings

Best for: boutique deco; basement raves; secret location.

Great: gastropub style food; Red Stripe on tap; barstaff.

My mate lives in a part of Nottingham that is really rundown. You know the type of place; devoid of love, laughter and life; bar the shady people who lurk in the shadows and skulk around after dark. Her street is littered with boarded up shops and rubbish is strewn on the road; recently coined ‘rape alley’ by the local rag. It’s that type of place. Her house is no different; large but intimidating in its gloominess. The doorway yawns wide open and crisp packets lie lonely in the pathway, yearning for someone to come and pick them up.

But as soon as you step through that door, something magical happens. This isn’t just any old house.

The tension in the air dissipates. The house is fresh and light and, for some reason, there is always the smell of appetising food cooking in the air. It’s airy and the rooms are spacious, her sofa is sink-into deep, and there are hidden rooms and lively pictures on the walls. It’s a real pleasure to visit.

The similarities between The Star of Kings and my friend’s house are staggering. To get to The Star of Kings you have to turn away from all the trendy bars and clubs and follow the road past dirty little alleys and estates and over a railway bridge. It’s an area of urban development, and that’s the key word: development. In a few years the area will be lovely - clear of the scaffolding and building equipment - but at the moment the road to the pub feels dicey and tense.

The pub sits at the corner of the road and looks foreboding from the front. It’s outside a small park that is enclosed by high fences that prevent anyone from getting in or out. Small groups of people mill about, adding to the tension that seems to hang in the air.

However, that all changes when you step inside the pub. The magic happens. The Star of Kings isn’t just any old pub.

It has all the feelings of a boutique trendy bar: chilled house music drifts from somewhere at the back, and comfy, vintage sofas lounge around at the entrance. There are kooky pictures hanging from the walls and flyers about central London events for people to grab. People, obviously locals, stand comfortably – leaning languidly against the bar, propping it up whilst chatting animatedly to the barman. The barman, a sparkling smile of a man, offers thoughtful suggestions as to what to order (“Red Stripe on tap, Thursday afternoon – why the hell not?!”) and where to sit (“the sofa at the very front, although beware, once you sit down you might not get up”).

The Star of Kings also doubles as a club, with large name DJs from Fabric nightclub headlining on Thursday and Friday nights down in the basement; a large, appropriately grimy room described as a ‘rave cave’ complete with bar (which saves the walk up and down the stairs). I’m a fan of ‘basement bashments’ – I’m even more of a fan of hidden, secret basements that house great DJs who play tune after tune starting in the early afternoon.

Finally, The Star of Kings serves gastropub style food, with an ever-changing menu of locally sourced fare, including a burger inspired by the chef’s home roots of South Africa: a blend of pork and beef mince and pickles, topped with chilli chutney and encased in flatbread and served with thrice-fried chips and salad. Their crisps are homemade and are popular with the locals that frequent the pub. There’s no way I can throw any type of shape on the downstairs dance floor without some sustenance inside my belly, and the food in The Star of Kings is filling enough to provide dance floor energy without leaving me so stuffed that I’m more a sack of potatoes in the corner.

The Star of Kings is a pleasure to visit. From its friendly bar staff to its basement club and Red Stripe on tap, I would travel through rough neighbourhoods and down creepy dark alleys to revisit a pub like this any day of the week.

“This bar-cum-club is slightly out of the way but it's worth trekking to because it's quite the little find. I especially like the proper basement club feel downstairs with low ceilings and concrete floors. It feels like you could get up to all kinds of mischief and nobody would ever know. Maybe good for celebrities to hang out there then?”
