The Skinners Arms Review

What does it take to be a winner? Well, being the ‘best’ usually involves one or more of the following things:
- performance enhancing drugs, lots of;
- a bit of hanky panky with the right bit of person(s);
- large, burnable quantities of money and time.

Unless, of course, you happen to be a pub. Then being the ‘best’ can be a bit tricky.

The Skinners Arms in King’s Cross appears, on the surface, to be just the same as any other pub of the Greene King, Young’s or Samuel Smith variety. It’s infested with all that ‘character’ type stuff: stained glass windows; ornate iron stools; odd paraphernalia on gaudy walls; carpets that were clearly designed by partially-sighted inmates at the Bedlam asylum circa 1800.

Yet despite all this, The Skinners Arms is a winner. The Most Perfect Cask Ales Pub in London, according to Abbot Ale. And why? Well, firstly, it’s spotless. The tables are so clean you could eat your dinner off them. At a price that’s ‘Come On Down’ right you can feast on a hearty dinner of steak and chips that includes peas large enough to frighten small children.

It’s also a place for the people. Whereas most venues of a similar ilk are exclusive gathering holes for portly, red faced, tooth-deficient gents, here you’ll find students, foreigners and even women! Gosh. From young folk ranting about 'dat well fit prezenta' on Sky Sports TV to intellectuals stroking beards whilst discoursing about Beckett's stark portrayal of man’s misanthropic obsessions - conversation is a must.

A great place for a refreshing pint of pale Timothy Taylor whilst you’re waiting for the St Pancras Eurostar connection. Otherwise 7 out of 10.

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
