Rotunda Review

Top 10 things to know about Rotunda in Kings Cross:

(1) Kings Cross is fast becoming a foodie destination right now with new eateries popping up left, right and centre. But did you know that this hidden, and revamped modern British canalside bar and restaurant has been around for 10 years? Neither did we, so it's high time we visited, and what better way to do it than to indulge in their Sunday Beef Club?

(2) With stylish interiors, an open kitchen, a dining counter, great ambience and a cracking view of Regents Canal from its extensive waterside terrace, Rotunda is more than a match against the best of Kings Cross. But it isn't the easiest to find. It’s almost secreted away and you'll wonder why Google Maps is directing you into an office building. But don't be deterred. It's in there alright.

(3) It's not a modern British restaurant without a proper Sunday Roast, and Rotunda is taking it to a whole new level. Whet your appetite at the bar with a "wake me up" Bloody Mary. Choose from seven variations, and three small plates of the chef's choice of canapes, including smoked salmon. Our favourite? The lamb and mint empanada.

(4) It's a feast so you better come hungry. To start, behold the best of the ocean with a seafood platter of fresh smoked salmon, dressed Cornish crab in the shell, and peeled Atlantic prawns with Marie-rose sauce.

(5) On to the main event. The sirloin roast beef, which came straight from their very own Corneyside Farm, was succulent and mouth-watering. The unlimited duck fat roast potatoes were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside alongside seasonal vegetables, crusty Yorkshire puddings and lashings of thick gravy. Sunday Roast, done right. If I was knit-picking, just wish the Yorkshire was a bit more buttery.

(6) There is always room for dessert. The poached meringue, grilled apricot, vanilla cream and Barolo syrup was the antidote needed to balance out the savouriness of the feast. I was just a touch disappointed that 3 out of 5 desserts had run out.

(7) This a Sunday roast for those special occasions; be it birthdays, anniversaries, or just a spontaneous afternoon of utter indulgence. You'll notice, looking around, lots of family gatherings happening too.

(8) Rotunda does hospitality the proper way so, expect warmth, friendliness and all the trappings of traditional manners from the concierge, to the manager, to the waiters from the moment you walk in. Manners maketh the restaurant. Not once does your glass go empty.

(9) There's more than meets the eye here. The dining area, bar, waterside terrace, plus a lower ground floor event space means Rotunda can accommodate as many as 650 party guests(!) So, that's the office party sorted. Is live music your jam? Visit on Thursdays to find an eclectic line-up of musicians ready to strut their stuff. That's music to our ears.

(10) To recap, the food was immense in quality and quantity. This is the place to spend your long afternoons, and we can't wait to bathe in the warm, summer sunshine with a cocktail in hand on their waterside terrace. The Sunday Beef Club is for those long afternoons for indulgence and paired drinks. Again, be warned: come hungry....read more

“I went to The Guardian Open Weekend event last Saturday. One of the venues was where The Rotunda is so my two friends and I decided to go for the beer & burger for £10 offer. Service was bad. I'm not sure if the staff were badly treated volunteers because a) they appeared to have no clue on how to work in a restaurant, b) they didn't seem to care. I felt on several occasions I could read some of the waiters minds and they were thinking 'I'm not being paid enough or at all to do this.' In my experience volunteers always do a job to the best of their abilities because they’re supper keen to make a good impression. It’s only when you’re treated badly that one starts to behave in a bad manner. And so I question the management of this venue. Being seated took forever. Ordering took forever. Being served took FOREVER. While two of us got served after an age and a day my other friend (the hungriest one of all) had to wait a further ten minutes despite me seeing the dish already prepared and waiting under the hot light to be delivered to his hungry jaws. The bar looked atrocious with all the empty glasses piled up on the counter. A diner sitting on the table next to us tutted – she’s a waitress and was appalled that the empties were left in full view – “all empties should immediately be put in the dishwasher or if there’s no room under the counter out of sight!” I agreed completely. She also had to wait for longer than necessary for her order. To be fair the burger was incredible. The beef was cooked to perfection and the bun struggled to contain the numerous layers of cheese, gherkins, and relish. There was a generous portion of chips too. When we’d finished we kept on getting the Evil Eye from the staff as if we had to push off as soon as our plates were scraped and licked clean and the contents of the beer bottle glugged down. But we had no intentions of leaving so soon after eating a mammoth meal. Besides, our next booked event wasn’t on until 5:30. We would have ordered more drinks but we didn’t want to add to the ever growing mountain of empty glasses and bottles on the bar.”
