Rotunda Review

Top 10 things to know about Rotunda bar and restaurant:

1) There are some restaurants in London you’d probably visit again. There are a few you might even recommend to carefully selected friends. But occasionally you find a restaurant that’s so faultless, you begin to question whether it’s all just a dream. Rotunda is the latter.

2) You set aside a sunny day for messing about along the canal near King’s Cross. You leave your yappy dog with the in-laws. Towards late afternoon, you end up in Kings Place - home of live comedy, theatre, music, and The Guardian HQ. Here you deposit yourself on the Rotunda secret garden terrace and order a life-altering gin, infused with elderflower and other such elixirs. Through juniper-tinted eyes, you’ll muse on the romantic view of the canal boats moored on all sides. You’ll consider a game of giant-sized alfresco chess, when offered, but continue loving your inert life instead.

3) And then hunger strikes, so you’ll retire inside the modern, casual restaurant to renounce your vegetarianism for a day, unable to resist the carnivorous delights winking at you from the menu.

4) You’ll blame Vincenzo - your convivial, chatty waiter - for luring you into this meat, fish and booze reverie with his persuasive ways.

5) You’ll order the beautifully presented, meaty cylinder of trout with fennel, caviar and cream cheese, and spend several self-absorbed minutes trying to recall a more satisfying starter. Your guest won’t mind. She’ll be absorbed by the tumeric and mango crab, such is the potency of her crustacean based trance.

6) As long as you’re not squeamish, you’ll accompany the chef to the onsite hanging room to learn how the beef and lamb are reared on a farm just north of Hadrian’s Wall. Provenance is paramount.

7) You’ll note that the meat is so soft you could almost sleep on it.

8) When ordering steak, you’ll ditch the fries in favour of the unbelievable broccoli, hollandaise sauce and almond finish.

9) You’ll explore the oenophilic landscape, what with more than twenty wines by the glass, and plenty by the carafe. You’ll remark that the Bodegas Tarabilla Tinto is the liquid equivalent of a heavy velvet red robe following a really hot bath.

10) And despite feeling particularly rotund after such a legendary feast, you’ll still envy those diners who’ve just arrived, about to experience one of the best meals they’ll forever keep secret from their friends.

“I went to The Guardian Open Weekend event last Saturday. One of the venues was where The Rotunda is so my two friends and I decided to go for the beer & burger for £10 offer. Service was bad. I'm not sure if the staff were badly treated volunteers because a) they appeared to have no clue on how to work in a restaurant, b) they didn't seem to care. I felt on several occasions I could read some of the waiters minds and they were thinking 'I'm not being paid enough or at all to do this.' In my experience volunteers always do a job to the best of their abilities because they’re supper keen to make a good impression. It’s only when you’re treated badly that one starts to behave in a bad manner. And so I question the management of this venue. Being seated took forever. Ordering took forever. Being served took FOREVER. While two of us got served after an age and a day my other friend (the hungriest one of all) had to wait a further ten minutes despite me seeing the dish already prepared and waiting under the hot light to be delivered to his hungry jaws. The bar looked atrocious with all the empty glasses piled up on the counter. A diner sitting on the table next to us tutted – she’s a waitress and was appalled that the empties were left in full view – “all empties should immediately be put in the dishwasher or if there’s no room under the counter out of sight!” I agreed completely. She also had to wait for longer than necessary for her order. To be fair the burger was incredible. The beef was cooked to perfection and the bun struggled to contain the numerous layers of cheese, gherkins, and relish. There was a generous portion of chips too. When we’d finished we kept on getting the Evil Eye from the staff as if we had to push off as soon as our plates were scraped and licked clean and the contents of the beer bottle glugged down. But we had no intentions of leaving so soon after eating a mammoth meal. Besides, our next booked event wasn’t on until 5:30. We would have ordered more drinks but we didn’t want to add to the ever growing mountain of empty glasses and bottles on the bar.”
