O'Neill's Review

‘This place is rife with bag and purse thieves,’ warns Google as I search for directions to O’Neill’s on Euston Road. Taking that into account as well as the charms of the surrounding area: Kings Cross train station across the road; student digs and youth hostel either side; a row of grotty takeaways and a constant stream of traffic, it’s not the best first impression and certainly not the kind of place I’d choose to hang out with my friends.

I’m a massive snob when it comes to judging pubs by their cover, so I was expecting sticky floors, useless staff and my purse to be nicked as I walked through the door – you can blame the internet for the latter. But, for the benefit of you lovely Fluid London followers, I put my fears and snooty opinions aside in order to bring you a fair insight in to the Euston Road branch of this well known Irish chain. And lucky I did, for it turns out both Google and I had the wrong impression.

Now unless you’ve been locked in a cupboard for most of your alcohol-drinking life, you’re likely to have set foot in at least one of the 62 O’Neill’s pubs in this country, so you should know what to expect. They all offer the usual Irish pub charms: exports such as Guinness, Caffreys and Magners on tap, cheap and satisfying pub grub, witty one-liners scrawled on the wall advising what you should and shouldn’t do with another man’s whiskey or wife, the latest sport on show, and a team of jolly staff keen to ensure that your eve is full of some good craic (not to be confused with anything Pete Doherty might be carrying on his personage).

Despite the dodgy location, this one was no different. The spacious ground floor buzzed with a great mid-week atmosphere, as football fans took in the big game of the night projected onto a massive screen, without so much as a ‘Come on you Reds!’ or grimace over at the opposing team’s supporters.

Upstairs was a much smaller and quieter area, blessed with a bar of its own, free from queues and away from the TV, and the best place to head for some relaxed dinner and chat. My friend and I whiled away an hour or so at our cosy little table for two, amongst a mix of happy-looking young to middle-aged couples and groups of friends. Comforted by a couple of draft beers and fed with generously portioned food from the good selection of hearty British/Irish fare - top marks for the perfectly cooked medium rare steaks and crunchy rustic onion rings.

So there you have it, despite my initial apprehensions, our visit was crime-free, except for the aforementioned grub, which at around £6 to £8, was a steal -sorry *getscoatandleaves*. Oh, and the 79p I was robbed of for a thimble-sized ramekin of pepper sauce to go with my Rib Eye – tasty yes, but only just enough to dip a couple of wedges.

Those minor discrepancies aside, O’Neill’s ticked all the necessary ‘good pub’ boxes and we were all smiles when we left. And, although I can’t promise I’ll be heading over to Euston Road especially for a regular visit, next time I’m in the area, or need to kill some time before I catch the Eurostar, I won’t be turning my nose up at it.

“Dropped by this place a couple of weeks ago. Great! really cheap and they serve Guinness Red which I can't seem to find anywhere. They had all the 6 Nations games on too, which was another bonus.”
