B@1 (Be at One) Review

Book a table at B@1 (Be at One)

Best for: giant range of cocktails; customer service.

Great: music; cocktails; entertaining staff; bathroom mirrors.

Dennis the dentist, Farmer Joe, Bob the Builder; a name can be very defining. I’ve heard of all sorts of name-career associations in my time. I once joined a spin class where the coach was a Mr. Pedal, and last year I had a minor ‘procedure’ and could hardly contain myself when my specialist introduced herself as Dr. Fagina!

Name etiquette is very different between cultures. In some countries you’ll be given a nickname as soon as your real name is uttered. Within minutes, I’ve previously become Phil, Philly and Flipper to a person I’ve only just met. Whereas in some cultures a nickname is developed over time, as the relationship is formed.

A quick game of word association, then. Birds’ nest: messy. Perforations: the tear-off slip at the bottom of your bills. Getting jiggy with it: ermmmm.

I know what you’re thinking. Why? Well, tonight at B@1 cocktail bar in King’s Cross it’s not messy and has nothing whatsoever to do with bill payments. Birds Nest, Perforations and Getting Jiggy With It (although all potential cocktail names) are, in fact, the nicknames for the staff at B@1: one has a birds’ nest hairstyle; one has plenty of body piercings; and another is simply called Jiggy.

Although, he’s not. Jiggy is actually Martin, the bar manager. How he obtained his nickname remains a mystery. Maybe it has something to do with his jovial manner when two girls are sat at the bar. To be fair, though, those girls ought not to feel uniquely special, since the bar staff are the most fun and friendly I’ve ever known in London, and make everyone, not just the two girls sat at the bar, feel special. They are totally buzzed out making cocktails, which can only mean one thing: GOOD cocktails. I owe it to my fellow countrymen to drink as much as possible so I can give you an accurate assessment as to whether the drink you’re choosing is good quality; simply at a bar with a Happy Hour(s) from 4.30–7pm, Tuesday to Sunday. There’s even a B@1 ‘Appy Hour’ app to download.

Rum and I have had a good relationship for many years. Occasionally we have our tiffs when he’s not presented to my liking, but no need to worry tonight; he’s strong, dominant and I happily kiss him goodnight in a Mai Tai.

Loving the tunes of Plan B and Chilli Peppers, and easily entertained by the bar staff’s rhythmic shakes, swirls and shimmies, rum and I hook up again. This time, he’s long and iced, and accompanied by our good friends gin, vodka and triple sec in a Long Island Iced Tea.

You could never NOT be in the good books with the B@1 bar staff, but speaking hypothetically, if that were to happen, you’d totally redeem yourself if you ordered a Dirty Martini. When my friend is congratulated at her fine choice of drink by the bar staff, I feel an unusual pang of jealousy. Would it be so cool if it wasn’t a ‘Dirty’ Martini? How does the word ‘Dirty’ make it so much more appealing? I wondered: would I have been cool too if I’d ordered Sex on the Beach, a Screaming Orgasm, a Cuban Pussy, a Candy Pants? Musing over this thought, I pay a visit to the girls’ room.

For once I’d recommend a visit to the toilets. When I see myself in the mirror I want to have an affair with the person looking back at me. Even if it is a trick of the long mirror, and maybe my rummified goggles, I still look pretty hot. Feeling this good would be awesome for a Saturday night dance floor Junebug. But this particular Thursday night is a little mellower, with couples on dates and clusters of creative types and tourists visiting from surrounding hostels.

If you’re in the mood for a short, long, or classic (or maybe even Birds Nest, Perforations or Jiggy), B@1 cocktail bar will have everything you need. If you really do want a good time drinking cocktails, meeting people and enjoying some good tunes, I couldn’t recommend B@1 cocktail bar enough, no matter how cliché that sounds.

In honour of names, and cocktails, I’ll say that I was Peachy Keen to visit B@1 bar. The Cosmopolitan crowd will put the Junebug into you, and be your Fire Starter even on those Dark and Stormy days. B@1 bar will become your Little Friend. For now though, farewell. PS I Love You.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
