Arabica King's Cross Review

Top 10 things to know about Arabica in King’s Cross:

1) This is not the Kings Cross of days past known for cheap thrills. Now it’s steel structures, new builds and bustling restaurants with a new clientele.

2) After a brisk walk, Arabica comes into view, awash with colour and exuding warmth. You enter and begin to eat with your nose. The smells emanating from the open kitchen make your stomach rumble and the sight of other patrons’ dishes get you all excited.

3) You sit, the kindly waiter marks the menu for the allergy-prone attendee and you order the beef cheek borekas, boregi, falafel, grilled halloumi, freshly made mocktails, lamb ribs, kebab el arabica, Cornish squid, Sujuk pide, potatoes, rice and beef shish.

4) The decor is a nod to the traditional Middle East and Arabica is alive with happy diners laughing and chatting.

5) The dishes begin to arrive and it’s a feast for the eyes. The pale yellow pastry parcels filled with beef cheek steam gently whilst the dark brown falafel bites sit on a bed of vivid green pickles. Creamy white halloumi is crowned by purple Turkish figs whilst dark green spinach shines next to the bright red tomato.

6) You tuck in, cutlery flashing against the light. The borekas are juicy and the halloumi is crisp adding salty hints to the sweet figs. A flurry of hands move empty plates off the small table and the pide is placed in the middle. The Middle Eastern equivalent to pizza, you tear at it with a sparkle in your eye and nod your approval as the beef sausage dances on your tongue.

7) The Cornish squid is the only minor letdown as it’s not cooked through enough for your tastes so you leave some behind and shovel spoonfuls of soft rice and crispy herby potatoes into your mouth.

8)A tiny clay oven finished with a bread dough lid is jovially placed on the table. After a fun stabbing session, you see the inside is full of sweet onions, mealy lamb koftes and burnished tomatoes. It’s good enough to make you sing.

9) Upon finishing you can’t walk, speak or hear. The Everything Pistachio dessert is the cooling dessert you need. A burnt pistachio cream, baklava crumb and mini Turkish delights sit atop vanilla soft serve, jamming your teeth together with a sweet sticky sensation.

10) The bill paid - not cheap but not extortionate - it’s time to be rolled out of there. After such a feast, slowly does it. Slowly....read more
