The Earl Derby Review

Top 10 things we learnt about the Earl Derby pub when we visited:

1) There’s nothing aristocratic about the recently reopened Earl Derby pub. It has enough retro chic to bring about a gastro-revival in the Kilburn area of north London.

2) Beer and food matching is the name of the game here. Ask Assistant Manager, Lizi, for suggestions if she’s around.

3) It makes you proud to be British when you’re served exciting brewery beer brands like Meantime Yakima Red, London Stout and Camden Hells. They also serve exotic lagers from around the world, notably the United States. A pint of Flying Snake Dog at 7.1% ABV anyone?

4) I sense the death of unhealthy soft drinks like J2O and the rise of the “healthy” soft drinks like Orchard Pig’s Apple Tingler and Fentimans Organic Ginger Beer.

5) Considering it’s a gastro pub, The Earl Derby’s food prices are incredibly accessible. They have 3 course set menus for only £13 with dishes like heart-warming fish pie with hake and mushrooms which isn’t even on the a la carte menu!

6) The starter to try is Paris Brown; flat and oyster mushrooms on rye toast with Stilton cream. I spoke to three members of staff and all three said it is their favourite starter. The mushrooms are so fresh; I suspect the chef might have done some personal foraging in Hyde Park during the afternoon.

7) Starter portions are royally large, but the mains are just as huge. Southern fried chicken came presented in an attractive fryer basket. Colonel Sanders would have been proud with Earl Derby’s secret marinating recipe, and the Camden Hells really does match well with southern fried chicken. The lightness of the lager contrasts well with the greasiness of the fried chicken.

8) Deer’s head, giant mirrors and captivating chandeliers make for a very inviting dining and drinking space.

9) No successful pub is without their special nights. Monday night is £10 boutique burger and beer night. Tuesday night is music quiz night, £2 entry per person with the promise of exciting prizes.

10) The number 1 rule of success? Look after your staff and they will look after your business. Not only have the staff tried the products they sell on the menu, they were taken on our private tour to the Camden Town Brewery recently.
