Lord Palmerston Review

Book a table at Lord Palmerston

Top 10 things to know about The Lord Palmerston pub in Tufnell Park:

1) Vacantly staring into the void at your desk, or idly thumbing your mobile screen during lunch, your thoughts wander, picturing lush green lands dotted with babbling brooks and countryside pubs. Why do these bucolic daydreams seem so elusive in reality? If only these peaceful village vibes were right here in London. Yet, right here, in London, on the side of a steep hill, such moments can be found. The Lord Palmerston is a countryside pub in all but it’s physical location.

2) Sure, much like its pastoral cousin, it’s not part of London’s thriving city centre, but it only takes a few minutes to arrive there on the Northern Line.

3) The horseshoe wooden bar is there, topped by a serried row of pull-pump beers, each named amusingly using words such as “bishop’s”, “wonky”, or “headbanger”; a slate full of Scotch eggs winks suggestively in your direction from the corner of the bar.

4) Over by the open fire, below the antique zoological and cartographical paintings, in what was formerly a small chapel (the high ceiling gives it away), a greying couple read novels from the comfort of tall-backed Chesterfield chairs, each thankful that the other has shut up for just a little while. A scruffy labrador curls up beneath their feet, lazily recounting the Hampstead Heath walk finished nearby only moments ago. The Lord Palmerston is dog-friendly, as long as the dog is friendly.

5) Towards the rear, in the secret walled garden, brunch hunters congregate on modern wood-panelled furniture, between the hours of midday and 4pm when the sun beams directly onto their Instagram-seflie faces. Taking a sip of your energising Aperol spritz, you make a mental note to recall this beer garden next time you need to organise a daytime birthday drinks event.

6) For this fictitious Sunday lunch scenario, you booked the Viscount private dining room inside near the bar; one of those nooks that is always mighty popular in pubs. The small group of actual friends who promised they would be joining you will sing your praises later, once they arrive!

7) In the meantime, you get chatting with the lovely bar and waiting staff, who you’d gladly exchange for your real friends if the option were on the menu, such is their welcoming, casual manner. They offer you a top tip on the wine: the La La Land Australian pinot noir; soft, silky, and berry berry satisfying. Who cares if it’s posh in price; so are you!

8) The food menu reads like a roll-call of farming counties: Yorkshire; Hampshire; Cumberland; Sussex. British provence is obviously important.

9) Your food will take a while to arrive, but be patient. Some elements are worth the wait. In fact, eschew the mains altogether - safe pub grub of the steak, pie, fish, chip, and burger variety - and instead opt for the summery starters. Their freshness, beautiful presentation and substantial size may surprise you. The on-trend more-ish, crispy cauliflower, or the saucy mackerel with Jersey royals could easily be disguised as main dishes were they ever to attempt to cross the borders of the menu. The omission of the middle course should leave just enough room to accommodate a sticky toffee pudding too.

10) Before leaving, take a peek inside the traditional Victorian Lords Room upstairs. Decorated with canine paintings, it has the feel of an old gentlemen’s club where hirsute chaps might retire to talk cricket and regional policy. The rural reveries live on.

“A decent roast on a Sunday after a walk around Highgate cemetery. Good tunes, great playlist, superb wine list. Nice range of ales too. The board games could do with a spruce up though.”

“Don't try the pub quiz here, it's WAY too hard. There must be some clever people living in Tufnell Park because my friends and I got royally whooped. Oh well, it was fun and we learnt some stuff, I guess. Things I DID like about the this gastropub: the variety of areas to sit, the artistic garden, the hearty food, and the jolly good wine list.”

“a great local. in days of yore, this place used to be a scuzzy boozer. now, it has been stripped back to basics. there's a great room upstairs that can be booked for parties, which is damn fine. The LP does a very good line in food - seriously tasty, and surprisingly reasonable. I'm assured the wine list is good, tho I tend to stick to the Directors myself! definitely worth a visit”
