Tom Aikens opened his eponymous Chelsea restaurant on 12 January 2012 after a significant interior refurbishment of the entire site.

Tom Aikens Restaurant, located at 43 Elystan Street, Chelsea, London SW3 3NT, originally opened in May 2003 and quickly garnered many culinary accolades for Tom’s very creative and distinctive modern French cooking.

After eight years, Tom and his new business partners, London Doors, decided it was time for a new focus for the restaurant. The objective was to continue to offer food of the gastronomic standard for which Tom is celebrated, but to move away from

the typical formal style of that type of restaurant. According to Tom, “We want our customers to relax and enjoy the whole dining experience, from food and drink to the actual dining room’s environment – this informality is definitely the mood in the marketplace for 2012.”

Along with a new look for the restaurant, Tom has developed a series of innovative à la carte and tasting menus, including six, eight and ten course options that are also available with matching wines. The food has taken a simpler approach, but still bears Tom’s exciting and distinct flavour combinations, with the visual aspect always an appealing focus. Tom’s key producers supply him the best of ingredients, which are then beautifully displayed on handmade potters’ china that Tom has specifically sourced from unique craftsmen.

The wine list features approximately 150 international bins, with prices starting from £22 (bottle) and £5.50 (glass), and £12.50 for a glass of Champagne (Laurent Perrier). The initial list has been developed by wine consultant Vincent Gasnier. The head sommelier is Raphael Rodriguez.

The 52-seat restaurant has been designed by Hakan Ezer, a well-known Istanbul designer. It features broadboarded oak floors, custom-designed hand-made wooden chairs, a variety of mismatched oak tables (no tablecloths), and evocative quotes about food and wine written on the walls, ranging from Socrates and Bacchus to Miss Piggy. Overall the mood is informal and slightly rugged, but stylish and urban. Key design elements include wood, concrete, canvas, and raw iron. Lighting is bright and airy by day, and subdued, warm and inviting by night, and there are rotating mirrors on iron rods that create illusions of depth and movement.

In addition, the newly expanded private dining room seats up to 12 in a visible yet private space. In his own words, Hakan explained that he wanted to “create something original that reflected Tom and his cooking now, that was inviting and welcoming and not overpowering or over-designed…a space that celebrates the simplicity of good ingredients in both the kitchen and the dining environment.”
