The Pembroke Description

The Pembroke, formerly known as The Coleherne, was for many years a landmark gay pub operated by the country's biggest managed house operator, Mitchells & Butlers. Purchased by Realpubs in September 2008 it has undergone a major refurbishment and been repositioned as a gastro pub.

It reopened in early December 2008 with a similar, quality offering to the rest of the Realpubs estate - freshly cooked British/modern European food served in a warm and homely real pub environment. The kitchen produces an excellent array of Modern European inspired dishes including stuffed chicken leg wrapped in

bacon served with parmesan mash and Madeira sauce and pan roasted lamb rump with a winter vegetable ratatouille and mint jus. Attracting a good mix of local business types, residents and visitors to the area, The Pembroke is a welcome addition to Old Brompton Road's dining scene.

Located within a five minute walk to or from the Earls Court Exhibition Centre The Pembroke features a 60 cover dining room to the rear, complete with an open kitchen. The traditional horseshoe shaped bar still dominates the front of the pub whilst upstairs a lounge bar and mezzanine provides low level seating and sofa areas for loafing around on those lazy weekends. more

“Formerly The Coleherne, The Pembroke remains a gay friendly venue in the heart of Earl's Court. Now with good food.”

“Service is terrible, bar was not particularly busy but all the staff managed to ignore me for 15 mins ended up going elsewhere. At nearly four pounds a pint thats not good enough not the first time this has happened here but is definitley the last.”

“First visit in '69 way back and most recently '95 i shall jealously guard my tee shirt. Always tremendously invigorating style of livening up the place. I miss it so it was rather a point of departure for the many lives touched. Never knew Heaven and many others. Earl's Court trivialized!”

“i've dined at The Pembroke 3 times now & on each occasion have had a marvellous meal. it's rare to find a menu where you want to try everything. all the ingredients are fresh, the portions are just the right size & the wine list, though not cheap, has been very well selected. The service was exemplary... particularly from the maitre d' , Halo, who is huge fun , very knowledgable & brilliant at his job. very much looking forward to my next visit. highly recommended.”

“Really nice bar, good attentive staff, excellent food however wear something warm as the heating goes off before 10pm yet the bar is open to midnight. Had to leave much earlier than intended with my friends as it was so cold.”

“After attending a function in Earl's court we've decided to try the pembroke in earl's court and we have to say it was a disgrace due the arrogance of some members of staff. they have a lot to improve.”

“What is the point of having a wonderful beer garden which you are unable to book? I tried to book dinner today for 6 and was told that it iss not possible - on the hottest day of the year! Mistake, you just lost £300. I suggest that if you changed your policy and let people book for dinner you may make rather a lot of money.”

“Ok as a gay man who's lived in Earls Court for 20 years, before I review The Pembroke itself, I must comment on the loss of South West London's last gay pub/bar. The areas huge gay population are now at a loss as to where to go for a gay pint these days. It's about time someone opened a new gay bar here and filled the gaping hole left by the Colherne. We don't all want to go to Soho or Vauxhall for a few beers after work. The Pembroke is a very nice venue and a cool place for a beer. I haven't tried the food yet so I can't comment on that. The venue is divided into 2 halves really. The bar area is along the far left-hand side and the main restaurant is along the far-right towards the back. Don't be put off by the interior views you may glimpse from the doorway. The bold wallpaper and stylish crystal chandeliers are only along the restaurant side. The drinking side still has a cool dark bar feel with wooden table and chairs, bar stools and very low candle-lighting. When I was in last Saturday night, the young, friendly bar staff served everyone with a smile - even the obviously gay customers. Try it. It's a nice place and the bar area has a relaxed atmosphere. I'll certainly go back again.”

“The Pembroke (or Coleherne as many still call it) has a good atmosphere and many gays still frequent it so I guess 'mixed' would be a good description.”

“The old Coleherne was a wonderful place for gays, an institutions - what a great loss - Earls Court gays comunity will certainly miss it...”

“It seems unbelievable that the world famous Coleherne has closed. Earl's Court was once at the centre of the London gay scene and the place is now a shadow of its former self. Those of us who remember the bar before its refit in 1995 will remember how wonderful it was to visit along with the neighbouring Brompton's Bar also now closed. It seems that a part of London's gay history has gone forever and it is a great shame that this venerable institution has gone.”

“Someone should open a really good gay bar in Earls Court - maybe the new Coleherne Arms (when it re-opens) could be that bar..? If not, the area is crying out for a decent gar bar and someone could make a killing (not Colin Ireland). Come on guys... Let's bring Earls Court back to Girls Court like it always was!”

“Is there anywhere in Earls Court gay any more, to think of the wonderful gay haunts in this part of london and now gone, The Coleherne, The Redcliffe, Bromptons.... It really is too sad. Poor little Balans on its own.”
