The Drayton Arms Review

Book a table at The Drayton Arms

The Drayton Arms, on the Old Brompton Road, in between Earls Court and Gloucester road tube stations and five minutes from the Fulham Road, is a slightly up beat version of the now ubiquitous gastro pub. Featuring rotating modern art by ‘local artists’ – though some may argue about giving them this label, funky beats in the background, great grub, poncy beers (Star and Hogaarden) and blackboards listing the specials.

Furnished with wooden tables and chairs, large green plants, and a smattering of couches the Drayton Arms is a cozy place to shelter from the storm. That said this is not solely a winter pub thanks to the tables outside that in the warmer months provide the perfect platform for people watching on the Old Brompton Road.

Unlikely to pay this pub a visit unless you live or work nearby; its often filled with ‘sloanies’ taking a break from the monotony of their Kings/Fulham rd regular haunts. Shame. Its an alright pub. Warm, friendly, acceptably priced for the area the Drayton Arms stands out in the local area.

“Been coming to The Drayton on and off for over 10 years and was very disappointed last night to see their new policy of "this table is reserved for those eating" on pretty much ALL the tables. They're going to miss out on a lot of business....”

“I like the Drayton arms - it's airy, light with nice people. Admittedly, it's not always busy, but it's more of a locals pub than anything else. If you get bored, you can always go to Eclipse across the road.”

“I worked as a barman in the Drayton in 1986. There was a wall separating the 2 bars (gone now), and the locals still talked about how Princess Diana used to come in with her girlfriends on Friday nights and get sloshed (before she was married, obviously; she lived just down the road). Upstairs was (and still is) the Webber-Douglas acting school where Terrence Stamp among others, studied. Bowie and Jagger popped in for a drink during a break while filming the Dancing in the Streets video, Rod Stewart lived in The Boltons, so he came in a couple of times. Freddie Mercury and Tina Turner lived nearby too and were occasionally seen. Clientele comprised an interesting mix of rich South Ken types, scruffy builders, and long-time locals. I went back last month (May 2004) and found the Drayton dramatically changed. There is mishmash of furniture which looks like it came from a charity shop, the wall separating the bars is gone, and there is zilch atmosphere anymore. The gin palace exterior is still the same, but it looks like the crowds have moved on - I was there for two hours one lunchtime and there were five customers besides me. I had a couple of beers, which were good, but skipped the food. The Irish barman (manager?) was nice.”
