Summer Alfresco Bar and Food Review
Planning a museum trip over the summer? Shopping around Kensington? Looking for a light and refreshing dining experience? Then the Summer Alfresco Bar & Food in South Kensington is an alternative to many of the capital's claustrophobic and noisy bar-restaurant venues. A place where real life nature can also be enjoyed, especially when the setting sun paints a picture, lighting up this historic building, creating awe-inspiring scenes that touch both the spirit and the soul. Combined with jazz music wafting away in the background; the Alfresco bar transforms into a chilled haven for courting couples most evenings.
Starters to woo the taste buds include pears, with gorgonzola (poached pear and soft gorgonzola on a bed of rocket with walnut dressing) and 'Artichoke, plum tomato, black olive and anchovy salad'. 'Smoked salmon and char-grilled asparagus' and 'Puy lentil, avocado, green bean, baby gem and red onion salard' are enjoyable main courses. The food served is as appeasing to the eyes, as it is to the stomach. There are several vegetarian options and side dishes are also available to compliment the mains. The desert listings are sparse, no ice cream or calypso coffees available. Nevertheless, still probaly tempting to most.
Personally recommended, is the organic wine range from Chile (Chilcas 'Organic Vineyards' Chardonnay, San Rafael, 2005). Resting softly on the palet, lacking the sharpness of most regular bottles of vino, makes this one in red or white, a good choice alongside alfresco style cuisine.
Ladies be warned: The trip to the bathroom involves a short walk outside, across the way to a portable arrangement. Clean and spacious, but please be advised; Bring an umbrella for the journey to protect hair and make-up!
During the week, a lunchtime special offer of 2 courses plus a glass of house wine is available for 15 pounds per person. This is a great way to complete your trip to the ‘Ice Station Antartica’ or the ‘Nature’s engineers reveal nano skills’ exhibitions currently on display at the Natural History Museum. Or to enjoy the summer in London, while the kids have broken free....at least till September! Anyone for afternoon tea?...read more
