Opal Champagne Lounge Review

Situated under L'Etranger on Gloucester Road, Opal is a late night club for those wishing to extend their evening out in Kensington.

Low lighting, intimate corners and easygoing background tunes mixed by a variety of dj's gives a good impression when you first enter Opal. The cost of drinks brings you down to earth with a jolt, especially if you've just come from a small Irish Bar opposite, but then I suppose we are looking at a late licensed lounge bar in Kensington, so I guess the prices aren't that bad, relatively.

Once seated with drink in hand you begin to take in the rather novel surroundings and the place slowly grows on you – maybe the ‘Seriously Opal' cocktail helped? - they do have a varied and inventive cocktail menu.

We'd recommend Opal if you're in the Kensington area, in need of a late license, enjoy watching beautiful people whilst sipping on your cocktail and have a few twenties to burn.

“ok so opal seems to be this snobby little club that some people might think that its hard to get in too, but its not. To get in if ur a guy do not wear trainers you wont be able to get into any london night club with trainers on and if you cant get in just ask the friendly staff why there not letting you in they will tell you. Ladies dont not turn up drunk and everyone have there id. What ever you do, dont get cocky to any staff member if you do you might as well start walking to another club. Opal is a club yes that mostly people from south kensington goes to but if your a regular you will know all of the staff and probably the owners too and you know how lovely they all are. They will always look after you know matter what and they are always on point!!! The music changes from time to time there are different djs on different nights. You will also find different premotions and events on the night you come. Once you have come to opal you will never forget it and probably come back even if its just for a quite drink! Everyone who comes to opal ends up being a regular. Take care people.”

“If you go to Opal bar on Wednesday at night, go at 00.30 ... there is a great ambiance. Music is nice, the deco too but you have no real place to dance.”

“If you go to Opal on a Friday or Saturday night, be prepared to be met by an unreasonable, rude and power-tripping little Blonde girl "managing" the door. This young lady (backed-up by a large eastern-european thug) will not care if you're on the guestlist she's holding or how polite/ quiet/ well/dressed/respectable/funky/fashionable you are. Gloucester road's own little tin-pot dictatoress will decide if you get in or not depnding purely on your socio-economic status. Needless to say, you'll have NO trouble getting in if you're a white chelsea rich kid (looking like a cross between Harry Potter and Prince Harry). This is an obvious policy by the club's manager (an Algerian migrant himself, incidently) to keep the club...ahem "respectable". Once/if you get in it's actually a cosy little club, but don't expect any loyalty from the door staff on your next visit!”

“After almost being refused entry though I had been on a guest list booked three weeks in advance, after our party spent close to a thousand pounds, and after an evening of overpriced drinks mixed with too much ice and too little alcohol, one bouncer literally threw my friend into the cloakroom at the end of the night to tell him that he was being too noisy and had better “shut up quick.” I told the 200+plus Afro-Caribbean bouncer to not speak to anyone ever in such a fashion, and found myself being roughhoused toward the exit, stumbling up the staircase backwards with two hands on my chest and a very angry man telling me to not tell him what to do. I pushed back against this bouncer that outweighed me by at least 50 pounds, and he stumbled backwards down a couple of steps. I was so surprised that he fell so easily that I actually grabbed onto his arms to prevent him from falling, and I ended up stumbling back down the stairs in my attempts to keep him standing. He then grabbed my neck with one hand and began strangling me, and said “you’re going to die, b*tch” as he led me up the stairs by my neck while my 5’1” female friend tried to intervene. My friend who had been told to “shut up quick” went ballistic, I broke the bouncer’s hold on my neck (rather impressively, I should add) and together we pushed the bouncer down the stairs again. All aggression, no balance. An eastern European bouncer sprinted up the steps and pushed us both out of the club (again, rather impress”

“Not sure about the decor - seems a bit leftover from the seventies! Bar prices are horrific and the barman is too obviously a student who would rather be somewhere else. Not responsive at all. Otherwise not too bad, but I've had better nights elsewhere...”

“This place is the funkiest place i''ve been to in a long time, it felt like an underground cavern, very intimate and private, but at the same time very friendly and chilled out. Bar prices are extortionate though.”

“This intimate and trendy latest addition to the kensington night life has caused me many a late night. With excellent cocktails and friendly bar staff, this regular locals haunt also hosts livemusic on sunday nights. The bar also has an eurasian aperitifs menu to satisfy those late night munchies. An absolute must!”
