Janet's Bar Review

Beneath the Brompton Hotel, Janet’s Bar is quite unlike anything else in this part of London. From Old Brompton Road, look out for the huge sign with a cartoon of the proprietor who bears an uncanny resemblance to Wilma from the Flintstones. In the flesh, she’s almost as wacky; a bubbly New Yorker with a real sense of fun who’s decked out the venue in her own fabulous style – gilded mirrors made out of old spectacles, rollers, hairbrushes and tennis racquets. Pictures of patrons adorn the walls, in varying states of intoxication, as well as fairy lights, neon signs, rickety old fans, Mickey Mouse balloons and I even found a calling card for a taxi firm in Woollacombe. It’s an Aladdin’s cave. Or rather, it’s Janet’s cave.

Staff behind the tiny bar were quick to welcome us to this quirky-kitsch world, which serves up pretty much every spirit you can think of, plus a selection of wines and spirits at OK prices. If you’re feeling peckish, they also have menus from several local restaurants, including sushi, pizza and Argentinean fare, which they’ll order for you and bring to your table.

There’s a cute little terrace at the front, plus soulful live music twice a night, seven days a week. Whether you drop in for a couple of cheeky ones later in the evening or hire out the place for a party, Janet’s Bar will do its best to make you feel at home. Whether you’d want your home to be anything like this curious place is another matter entirely… more

“Rude and nasty staff pushed us to drink up and order more, we didn't so we were thrown out of the bar. Basic Customer Service strongly needed.”

“As good as bars get in London, let alone South Ken. I've not been to a venue anything like Janet's before. It's like an all American dive bar type place and my mates and I love it. First choice for a night out. There's a huge choice of drinks, like cocktails, beers, wine etc. and the usual, but you also get free American style snacks! You'll feel instantly at home and meet new people. Janet obviously wants to get to know her customers and has lots of regulars. The service is also the best of anywhere I've been. You don't stand waiting at the bar. You're served rightaway and staff will come to you and ask if you need anything. There's a little terrace outside. Also a live musician who is great to have playing in the background, adding to the atmosphere. I've spent many nights there with mates until the early hours because it's open until the little hours. Anyone who complains about price should remember it's Chelsea and the drinks are good quality, worth what you pay for, and also excellent value considering the area. A great mix of people, an authentic relaxed atmosphere, buzzing on weekends and complimentary snacks! Visit Janet's Bar and you won't regret it.”

“I want to give Janet's Bar 5 stars all round. That's what the bar is, really. It's star quality. You won't find anywhere like it in London because it has an authentic, uniquely friendly, quirky all-American vibe. There's live music, which is often hard to come by in good London bars. The drinks menu is extensive, so whether you feel like a cold beer, a nice bottle of wine, a fun original cocktail or a glass of bubbly to celebrate, you'll find something to suit you. The drinks and overall atmosphere are worth every penny. Bearing in mind that the area is one of the most upmarket in London, the prices are incredibly good. There's a lovely little terrace outside where you can sit and watch the world go by. You also won't be booted out onto the street while the night is still young, because Janet's is open until late, long after other venues in the area have closed. You may even get a complementary hot dog or some popcorn during your stay. It's the perfect place to have a drink and catch up with friends, or to spend some time before going to one of the local nightclubs. The bar staff are efficient in taking your order and bringing it to you, which means you can just relax and know you're being taken care of! Janet herself is such a riot. She will light up the room when she walks in, take your orders herself, and chat to you like you're an old friend. I highly recommend Janet's Bar. It's well worth a visit, and you'll want to go back again and again.”

“As stated above, most definitely the best bar in London. My friends and I came across this amazing little gem of a place by accident and have been going back every week since. I'm not alone in this either- the number of regulars, all of whom Janet herself knows by name and face, just goes to show what a fantastic spot this bar is. The cocktail list is well worth a look- it's extensive, varied and each delicious creation is definitely worth the price tag. And the prices are good when one takes into consideration where the bar is situated- at the hub of South Kensington. There's also a great selection of wines and spirits. To the satisfaction of those gathering at Janet's Bar before going to Boujis (favourite nightspot of Prince William etc., which is just across the road) on weeknights, Janet is now serving £3 shots of a yummy vodka and liquor mixture. We also get given free popcorn, PB and J sandwiches, nuts and hot dogs! The interior of the bar is one of my favourite things about it. The walls are covered corner to corner with photographs taken over the years. Souvenirs of parties gone by such as party hats, streamers, banners, posters and ornaments lining the shelves add to the eclectic, unpretentious all-American vibe, and the owner Janet embodies this entirely. The bar is open until 2.30am, long after all the others in the area lock up. You also never have to wait around to be served, and your drinks come promptly. There is live music every night- three different singers play to a relaxed yet well-dressed crowd. I always meet new people every time I go. If you haven't yet been to Janet's, you should know that it's definitely worth a visit (or twelve). Even if you come during the day, you can get a coffee and muffin for £2.50. The staff are friendly and efficient, the drinks are good, and the atmosphere is constantly vibrant.”

“Anyone who has not enjoyed a night at Janet’s Bar should make a beeline for South Kensington ASAP. With an eclectic and well-loved interior- you’ll find party hats, personalised menus, flags, streamers and other such paraphernalia- Janet’s Bar gives off an unpretentious American vibe. For an after-work or pre-nightclub drink you are utterly spoilt for choice: there’s an extensive, mouth-watering cocktail list (you’ll want to try them all) as well as a good selection of high-quality wines and champagnes, all worth the price tag. Five nights a week a talented guitarist serenades the vibrant crowd, wherein chic young professionals mingle with dapper businessmen. The location is perfect for the stylish twenty-somethings who are looking for a place to hang out before going to famous nightclub Boujis (just across the road). On these nights you can get a delicious vodka shot flavoured with liquor for just £3! If you’re lucky you might get to meet Janet herself. She’s a gregarious, American blonde bombshell who will always make you feel welcome and comes in frequently to chat to her loyal regulars, all of whom she knows by name and drink. The bar is open until 2.30 am, long after the others in the area close up, and the service is always incomparable. Whether you pick a seat at the bar, at a table, on the terrace, or choose to rub shoulders with other fashionable partygoers, you will never have to wait around for your drink. Overall, the service is brilliant, the ambience is laid-back and fun, and the clientele smart. If anything, the regulars at this great central London bar speak for themselves. If you go once, you’ll keep going back!”

“Most unique bar in London- I am not surprised it won an award for 'Best Bar in Kensington and Chelsea'! The drinks were great and I loved the crowd who were all cool, interesting and friendly. It has loads of quirky surprises- for example free hot dogs with your cocktails!”

“Count me in!! I brought a bunch of my friends here - we LOVED it - what a cool bar - GO JANET! GO JANET! We had martinis and Silver Streaks - really tasty. Booked my BF's 25th at the bar - live music, hot dogs and martinis. Also loved the staff-completely eclectic - Poles, Surfers, Irish singers, and The Janet - an American who is a cross between Sharon Stone and Dolly Parton!”

“Janet's Bar is the best bar in London! We had a spontaneous party of school and uni friends last night and everyone showed up from Charterhouse. Eton, Radley, Oxford, Edinburgh, Bristol, and more. Janet treated us royally-live music, Easter sweeties, hot dogs and the bar put us all in a splendid mood. This started off the Easter weekend brilliantly and we are going back Sunday night. Janet's daughter's godfather is often up from the country and he is a hilarious old school gentleman who adds to the festivities. This is the only bar in South Ken where everyone is welcome equally-just don't complain about prices because Janet has so many loyal customers that you will look silly. You get a lot for the money...”

“This place never fails to impress me. The drinks are excellent and my friends and I love singing along to the live music while socialising with fellow customers and sipping on the delicious cocktails! This is my favourite bar in London as one has a unique experience ever time you go! Also janet is hilarious!”

“I have never had a bad night in janet's because you never know what you're going to get. Go in with a sense of humour and expect the unexpected. The drinks are like the bar staff tall slim and tasty and the music rocks”

“Had a fabulous evening at Janet's Bar-went with 10 friends-the cocktails were yummy and the music great! Janet is really cool and VERY smart. All the young people go in to speak to her-the place is alwas packed-Janet knows how to pick barmaids-they all are fun. The last review seems to be a lie because there are no barmen and the only way there would be 1 drunk in the bar on a Friday night is if people are still at work. This bar is not for people who "don't get it"-it is a one-off, very cool, bar with a sense of humour-that is the point.”

“This place is without a doubt one of the worst cocktail bars (or any kind of bar!) I have ever visited. I went there on a Friday evening and the place was deserted apart from one drunk. The ‘kooky’ decorations just looked tired and dusty. The bar was sticky, the menus covered in spilt drink, the floor dirty and the toilets utterly horrific. And worst of all, our cocktails were terrible – made with little skill or knowledge, and in my case, omitting one of the main ingredients! When I complained the barman didn’t seem to understand why it was a problem that he’d used Vodka instead of Amaretto. Utterly awful.”

“At £6.50 for a gin & tonic, you can forget it. When we asked to have the bill of £29 for 1 x gin & tonic, 2 x rum & cokes and a daiquiri broken down the staff tried to justify it with free music and the fact it was a singles bar. We didn't know it was a singles bar and if you're charging £6.50 for a single G & T, it's not free music. It's got a nice boho vibe but the drinks came in plastic glasses.”

“Back to Janet's Bar yet again. This is the funkiest and fun bar in London and I am always happy to bring a group of friends here. The prices are typical South Kensington but the atmosphere, drinks and music are worth it! You will look very cool to suggest this bar to your friends.”

“I'm a big cocktail fan and a friend recommended janets bar. So i went, expecting to sit down and have a really good cocktail. I was surprised when i was there as I had so much more than a great cocktail: the atmosphere was so original, unlike any other bar i've been to; and the bar girls and regulars were very warm and friendly.”

“What fun! Had a blast last night at Janet's - very cool crowd that is also 'nice' and friendly. Prices are typical South Ken but who cares? It is worth it-ambiance different than any bar in London and you feel welcome! Tip - don't complain that prices are cheaper in a pub because you will look silly! It isn't a pub and frankly, no-one cares.”

“Just to point out, regarding annab's review, that Janet's husband, David, passed away some time ago. As for the joint, it has its moments so atmosphere can be unique- just expect south Kensington prices- you're in South Kensington!”

“The owner and staff are really friendly and cool! This bar is about value for money but not about price - you get value for money in its uniqueness, no entrance or cover for live music, friendliness and fun! You need a good sense of humour and don't worry about the cost of drinks - they are doubles!”

“This place is pretty unique; it’s relaxed, down to earth and individual. The walls are covered with pictures of the regulars, press cuttings and cartoons of the licensee Janet. There’s a little raised terrace out the front that is great in the summer and where you might get embroiled conversation with Janet’s husband. The drinks menu isn’t extensive, but this doesn’t really matter and as for food, well they’ll phone you in a pizza!”
