Feng Sushi Review

Best for: Takeaway sushi; a quick bite; lunchtime treat.

Great: Seafood in west London.

I love fish. And not just eating it. Often, when visiting supermarkets I head straight for the fish counter where I stand gawping at it for a good ten minutes or so, awed by the lifeless puckered faces staring back at me. They always look so miserable, plain grumpy, if I’m honest. But then I suppose it’s no life sitting on a bed of ice staring out at a row of Muller Crunch Corners.

So I was irritatingly excited on Thursday evening as I made my way down Kensington Church Street, heading for Feng Sushi. My sushi experience up to this point had been limited to supermarket selection packs and eating wasabi peas until I sneezed. I am a complete novice. A bumbling, sneezing sushi novice. This is troubling for someone so mesmerically drawn to fish. It is a gaping hole in my portfolio that needs to be addressed and a source of some embarrassment. Like Bruno Tonioli having to admit that he only knows half of the Macarena.

I was determined to put this right and Feng Sushi was my chosen training ground. It was a sound choice in terms of making the introduction. The weather outside was foul and we gladly bundled in through the door. It was small, maybe marginally bigger than my living room, and simply furnished with what appeared to be flat-pack furniture, again not dissimilar to my living room. It is not the sort of place you would want to turn up to en masse. If you did you would probably need there to be no other customers that evening, as there is only room for around twelve diners.

“Perfect!” I thought. It was exactly the sort of straightforward venue I was after. No pomp and ceremony. No sneering waiters barely suppressing their contempt when, frustrated at failing to master chopsticks yet again, I inevitably ask for a fork. Just me and the fish. I rolled up my sleeves and prepared to get stuck in.

Then I looked at the menu. It was vast and bizarrely, I thought, advertised a selection of wines, cocktails and beers. I’m all for choice, but the availability of a lychee martini seemed incongruous with the setting. This was of no concern to my girlfriend who having spotted it, quickly ordered one, while I settled for a bottle of beer. The lychee martini was deliciously perfumed, but erred ever so slightly on the wrong side of too sweet.

On the whole, the service was good and we were soon presented with an array of dishes. I particularly enjoyed the rainbow trout with salmon eggs; the highlight of the reasonably-priced deluxe sashimi. For those unsure of whether to go in at the deep end, the mackerel salad would prove a good choice and would make for a guilt-free lunchtime treat. Perhaps the one disappointing selection was the spicy crispy baby squid which was distinctly short on spice.

However, it was the lack of space that proved the most difficult obstacle to overcome. With dishes arriving regularly from the kitchen, space was at a premium and it became increasingly difficult to accommodate everything on our small table. I also noticed, having moved on to my second drink, that there didn’t appear to be a toilet, unless it was accessible through the kitchen which seemed unlikely.

It all contributed to the notion that Feng Sushi was far better suited to a bite to eat at lunchtime, than an evening unwinding over a long dinner. We outlasted our fellow diners, who came and went, seemingly heading off for further pursuits.

If, following a busy morning of attacking the nearby shops on Kensington High Street, you fancy unwinding with a glass of wine and delicious plate of sashimi, then Feng Sushi provides an indulgent alternative to the soulless coffee and sandwich chains offering up pre-packaged lifeless salmon nigiri. Or, you could make use of the well-run takeaway service if, like me, you’re an a-fish-ionado who likes to take their time to savour every bite.
