The Anglesea Arms Review

Hodgekins and I descended from the hansom cab not four hundred yards from South Kensington underground railway station. The street outside the Anglesea Arms, a well known tofkin was thronged with people of a certain Ilk. There were a number of toffs and would be Rothschilds who depite the sun still being high in the sky were clearly on the ran tan. Hodgekins noted that from the rings on their fingers a number of these gentlemen were obviously hammered for life. Despite having taken the vows they were surrounded by large numbers of mot , many of whom were clearly little more than high class toffers. Hardening our hearts against such company we pushed through the melee into the lusheree. Depite the early hour both of us were mightily parched. Being the absolute brick that he is Hodgekins marched up to the bar and we were soon qwaffing two large bumpers of stout. These slid down so well that we felt despite the irksome braying of the toffers and their prey that we would sample some more of their fine victuals. A quick glance at the fair maid behind the bar brought two more pints of stout to our thirsty lips.

Suitably calmed after the rigours of our cab journey and armed with two more tankards of frothy ale we moved out into the court yard overlooking the street to observe the clientele. Judging by the size of their large and shiny timepieces and the volume of the mundane discourse I ventured to Hodgekins that we were obviously surrounded by a bunch of bankers and usurers’. Wise as ever he confided that the only way to endure such bass company was to spectate in a state of well lubricated medication. Two large whiskies from a fair selection of the Caledonian nectar were promptly used to chase down the warm and frothy ale. Despite the unfortunate clientele we could not fault the alacrity of the serving maid nor the quality of the ales/stouts and chasers. The Abbot of the inn clearly knew his piping. Heartened by the fine victuals we realized that if we were to push on towards the river then we would need some sustenance. After a brief discourse with the fair maid, two fine hot minced beef sandwiches were dispatched to sizzle on the rasher wagon. Tasty though these fortifications were ,I ventured to avoid dryness of the throat, that they should be washed down with something cold fizzy and Flemish in origin. Two highly chilled tankards of a brew hailing from the Alsace (I fear) appeared and dispatched the much needed scran to our stomachs.

Thus fed and watered I suggested that we head off in search of more salubrious surroundings to escape the deafening roar of the wealthy oaf. Hodgekins eye however had fallen upon one of the bankers concubines who was clearly dressed for the heat of the Cote D’Azur. Initially she seemed smitten by his wry wit and caring smile. Leaving a master to his game I moved off to refresh myself in the latrine. I came back to altogether more unpleasant scene. A besuited bludger was poking poor Hodgekins in the chest, taken aback by some affront. It would seem that this woman of ill repute had taken umbrage with the suggestion that she and not he should purchase the round of shots that he had kindly suggested to toast good health..” Press on Hodekins, Press on.”

“A great pub in a quite barren part( Drinking wise) of wealthy London. Good if heavy food and a nice variety of beers. Get here early. Stake your place and watch, listen and smile at the Lords and Ladies getting hammered.”
