O'Neill's Review

First things first, a quick lesson in the Gaelic: a door with ‘Fir’ marked on it is meant for people of the male persuasion. Ladies, you take the door with ‘Mna’ written on it (even though it is an anagram of the word ‘Man’). Easy mistake to make after one too many Guinnessessessess, I can vouch.

It appears that somebody at Mitchells & Butlers has got their thinking cap firmly on their head. Mitchell & who? Don’t they make cigerettes? Nope. They are the owners of O’Neills and the people whom we have to thank/blame for giving city suits All Bar One and smeggy students Scream. It is, therefore, fair to say that they know their themed-bars, and they have recently recognised that, outside of the USA, rustic Irish-themed bars really only belong in Ireland.

O’Neills in Harrow is one of the lucky ones chosen to experience the transformation firsthand. Although the difference isn’t immediately mind-altering (live music is still on the menu) - it is certainly an improvement. Out goes the Blarney and in comes cleaniness. This means no more rusty bicycles hanging from the wall, and no more dusty old men hanging onto the floor. Foul table splatters - out, friendly table service – in.

Even the bar lady, with her seductive and convincingly un-Irish French accent, thought the refurbishment “looked great compared to what it was before”.

The food has also been given a hoist up the culinary ladder. I predictably opted for the Irish stew (with an air of scepticism). What I received was an honest winter warmer that came with a sizeable chunk of good-for-ya bread and some Colcannon (which, if Google’d, is not ONLY an Irish band but also a very delicious combination of mashed potatoes and cabbage. It may not sound or look pretty but by golly, it’s tasty).

Although this is a new and improved O’Neill’s, many locals will no doubt still ask for a pint of Carling, ignoring the superior options of Budvar or Erdinger. And so I say to you, it may come in a funny glass and look a bit poncy, but it does the job!

Mitchells & Butlers are also aware of how much us menfolk love spending our evenings and weekends grunting at televisions and therefore, football and rugby are shown every Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (well, we need at least a couple of days off a week so that we can stare blindly into the sun trying to work out what it is and why it hurts our eyes so much).

Overall, you probably wouldn’t ask Mitchells & Butlers to interior design your new Putney flat overlooking the Thames, but you certainly wouldn’t mind them minding their own business, which is to manage bars, cheerfully.
