The Hampton Review

Top 10 things you need to know about The Hampton Pub:

1) At the end of lunch Geo, chef and owner of the pub, emerged from the kitchen, exhausted but enthused with a story to tell.

2) Chef for six weeks, he took over what was once known as the worst pub in South East England and was now, proudly, voted number 1 Hampton, with sold out gourmet nights and a growing army of regulars.

3) The day began with a furious hangover flurry and a heart-sinking TfL check. Typical East to West transport combo - bus, train, narrowly miss train, get another full of drunk rugby fans, then an Uber.

4) The Hampton is a red brick building in a suburban quadrant, the interior is red flock banquettes, dark wood furniture, big screen sports in the bar. But, I stammered, this is not what I was expecting at all. This is like the pub my Nan makes us go to.

5) Like anyone who has lived in Zone 2 for too long, I am naturally suspicious of anything that resembles the suburban pubs of my forbearers and their microwaved offerings.

6) The menu was therefore unexpected. I ordered the crayfish and prawn cocktail. I was expecting limp crustacea on wilted lettuce but was proven so very wrong as pink and firm little morsels arrived dressed in delicious sauce. Oh, the delight of a well-made prawn cocktail; it's too nice to ever pass up.

7) All around us tables cooed with delight as bottles of well-priced wine were opened, waitresses fussed over children and plates with obscenely large and golden Yorkshires began to meander through the dining room.

8) My roast Sunday lunch was a decadent tartlet filled with mushrooms, cream and fresh herbs with cinnamon-spiked root mash, roast potatoes and one of those Yorkshire puddings  proudly crowning the plate. Ribeye steak and chips was medium rare and a sunny yolk-rich homemade béarnaise as an aside.

9) Common decency shouldn’t have allowed me to eat pudding after the generous roast but ethereal sticky toffee pudding can't be ignored and neither can the promise of ice cream made in-house.

10) Extremely well fed, we embarked on the journey home, an hour on the Piccadilly line with huffy tourists. Call me sentimental, but this is nothing compared to the journey of one pub to the top and one man’s passion to make his community’s dinner much better.
