The Holly Bush Review
The Holly Bush is featured in these Guides:
Hampstead. Not a bad little plot really: the sprawling Heath, the intriguing boutiques, the mouthwatering restaurant aromas, and the comforting poshness of it all. Oddly enough, most of it catches your eye long before the Holly Bush does. However….
Deceptively small from the outside but like the Doctor’s Tardis on the inside, this inn-on-the-green is invitingly homely in a “get the good biscuits out, the vicar is coming round for tea” kind of way.
Arriving earlier than my drinking companion I spent no more than a few seconds at the bar before someone started chatting to me. Sadly, not the Charlize Theron lookalike I had hoped for but rather one slightly pickled Economist writer - who came a worthy second.
Friendly? It’s that sort of pub. Having a wealth of beers, choice tucker, ‘two’ sets of Scrabble and an embarrassment of whiskeys make the Holly Bush a recommendation for all ye olde pub lovers.

“I ATE AT THE HOLY BUSH WITH MY HUSBAND, SISTER AND NEPHEW _ THE MEAL WAS A DISASTER ESPECIALLY THE BILL OF 180 POUNDS - so called crab on toast was a pate - meat pie was like concrete with dry meat and carrots soggy red cabbage, the steaks were tasteless and chips soggy - wine was put on the table unopened the service was so unprofessional the so called waitresses did their best but for the price it was a rip off. Where have the standards gone of the good British food we always enjoyed in our pubs - a very sad and expensive evening in the HOLLY BUSH!!!!!”

“Lovely pub, especially in winter time with cosy nooks & crannies, and board games available to play infront of the 'fire'. Food looked wonderful, but I was very disappointed to find that my shot of Talisker was watered down and was served in a dirty glass. I would'nt have minded if it had been any old whiskey, but if someone is buying a high quality single malt, it's condescending if nothing else to recieve one that is watered down. However, a Dorset bitter on draft was smooth and that it was warm in the winter was quite comforting! Service was not quite there but very pleasant. ”

“When I was young, there used to be small village near me called Ashby Parva, with a pub called the Hollybush. Which, to be frank, was a bit poo. Its Hampstead namesake is however a differant kettle of fish. If you can find it tucked away in the backstreets, you will come across coal fires, good real ales (unusual in london), alcoves and snugs aplenty, and great food selection. A proper village pub all in all, if rather lacking in young farmers out on the scrumpy.”
