Roebuck Review

Can coziness gleam? If it can, the Roebuck has patented the notion. What a cool bar. Mastering the art of elegant grunge, this Hampstead pub looks like a posh little joint from the outside, yet upon entrance a mish mash of tastes collide, leaving you intrigued, joyful, and then, eventually, drunk.

If you can imagine a 1970s American rec room, gone Brit pop glam boudoir, turned modern gothic hunting cabin in quaint old Hampstead today, then you might be able to fathom it. Lacquered ceilings shone, as we chose a small rounded table by a fireplace – if only for a good view of the place: all manners of seating is available from booths to corner couches.

There’s a non-smoking atrium with mismatched fairy lights, exposed brick, and complimentary colours. It looks out onto the patio where erected tents shield the rain (or sun), and bursting green trees hang over creating a forest feel. Inside walls are papered with almost psychedelic patterns, around blackened Victorian fireplaces; 1960s chrome lamps hang over stately wooden tables packed with friends drinking and eating. Ok, I’m making it sound too busy, but somehow it really works.

The menu matches the aesthetic, offering a collection of dishes each with an exotic or trendy touch. It features a variety of great starters: paper thin tortilla frites with Mediterranean dips, calamari bits with salad were all awesome.

Hearty or light mains are there, depending on your appetite, my friend had salmon kebabs with couscous, and said it was peppery and fishy (“in a good way”). My cheddar slathered burger was very substantial, great following say… a session of footie on the Heath? Food is very affordable, with the dearest plate at £7.90.

Beverage choice is wide ranged with everything from Polish vodka to Japanese beer, to punchy Italian vintages. We stuck to the white, which was repeatedly topped up by the charming manager, Antonio.

The Roebuck offers quiz and movie nights in the colder months and is available for private hire. A separate bar lies in the basement should you fancy privacy, but the pub’s diversity allows for areas to be easily sectioned off. Stumbling away I couldn’t help but feel jealous of the Hampstead residents who might call The Roebuck their local.

“Went to the Roebuck with a large group of friends for Christmas lunch. Hugely disappointing. Portions were stingy and the food poorly cooked - verging on inedible. As the food didn't arrive until gone 2pm and we had hungry kids with us, it was too late to send the food back and go somewhere else, so we struggled through, but under different circumstances, i would have walked out. The veggie option was limp pasta in tomato sauce, the roast beef came out as shriveled rump steak that was tough as old boots. The roast potatoes were covered in black bruises, the carrots and sprouts, i can only assume, were left over from last year. For £10 a head i'd have felt ripped off - but The Roebuck had the cheek to charge us £20 a head for two courses. Disgraceful. When we spoke to the Manager, our complaints fell on deaf ears. She was unconcerned that we'd had such a bad experience. When we saw people being served huge plates of lovely looking roast beef with yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings (for £11!), she explained that they had ordered off the Sunday lunch menu, but we'd ordered off the Christmas menu, which is provided by Youngs centrally. If we had a problem we should take it up with Youngs. So tough basically (though not as tough as the steak we were served...). I'm taking it up with Youngs - but thought i'd warn you too. I won't go there again - that's for sure.”

“Looks nice, smells pleasanter than it's old incarnation, but definitely style over substance. Can't forget the evening I went there, and they were playing a muzak version of U2. As if that wasn't bad enough they served me up a portion of over-priced undercooked potato wedges. Avoid if you can...”

“This pub is a joke. I went for lunch today. The pub was empty but they still hadn't managed to cook my food in 45 mins!”

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
