The Rutland Review
The Rutland is featured in these Guides:
Sharing the riverside pavement with The Blue Anchor, The Rutland edges it's neighbour on the size front. With more seating inside and a larger bar, this is generally the slightly more popular of the two, for the 20 to 30's crowd.
There is plenty of seating outside, though during the summer months you'll be hard pushed to find even a piece of the wall to sit on. You could always risk the launching walkway for the rowing club next door, but beware of the crews returning from their workout on the Thames - they're sometimes a little wobbly on their feet and swing the boat round precariously, threatening to decapitate anyone unawares.

“We visited the Rutland Arms by the Hammersmith Bridge this evening for Dinner. We ordered three different meals, one of which was at best acceptable, the other two disgusting. The first meal was the Roast which was OK except that it mostly consisted of potatoes. The second meal was the sausages which could not even be cut through with a knife because they were dried out and burnt. The last and third meal was the Beef and Ale Pie which had virtually no beef and only gravy with the pastry like the sausages, dried out.
When we raised this with the waiter, he responded that he had asked us earlier if the meals were OK to which we agreed they were. However, that was almost as soon as we had started and we had not been in a position to know if the meals were acceptable or not.
At our request, the waiter then asked the someone more senior to see us who immediately took an aggressive stance stating that we had been asked earlier and that as we had already eaten some of the food, she could not give any form of refund. Only with some argument did she agree that they would refund one meal but not any more. Even though we tried to raise this problem in a reasonable manner, we were treated very badly which left us feeling especially bad about this experience.
The Rutland Arms is in a great position, the decor is lovely and the drinks were fine. However, we absolutely would NEVER go back or recommend this as a Pub to eat at.”

“Went into the Rutland last week after hearing about the refurbishment. I was very disappointed, don't get me wrong the pub looks great but the service was terrible, not helped by a very rude little Scottish man. He was swearing about and too the customers and staff. ”

“Have just got home from a day by the river, and what can I say. I have frequented the Rutland a few times in the past but today was different. There weren't many people in the bar, probably due to the weather conditions, but the service was exceptional. The man behind the bar was attentive and knowledgeful, extended their specials' menu to cater for my girlfriends needs, and even offered great table service, which was a pleasant change from the norm. The manager on duty was around, smiling and even found the time to come over and ask how my day was going. A great pub which in my estimation has gone up 10 fold. There were even outside halogen lights to help the cold outside when I had a cigarette. I recommend highly. ”

“This is by far the best place to go in the summer. There is nothing better than seeing the sunset from the bank of the thames over the greatest city in the world.
Location is great, wine menu needs improvement, food was nice contary to other reviews and also delivered in timely fashion. And great value in my opinion.
Go here in the summer though.”

“Good location, staff has always been a bid slow, but apart from that all right I thought until today. I came around at around 2.45pm and I did fancy a Ceasar Salad and a refreshing drink. I did not know what to say when I recieved my salad. Not that I had not had one there before so I had an idea what I could expect. Not on this occasion. Green salad that was already brownish, lots of salad dressing, cucumber, tomato, onions and somewhat dry bread. A joke I thought and went.”

“Nice pub, good location. Only problem is that the bar staff appear to have all the motivation of a snail on hash - if the pub is busy, be prepared to wait for a drink. For a long time.”
